Can anyone help me? i put some new plants in my tank at the weekend and i have just noticed some strange things happening to my fish. As you can see from the pics i hope, my gourami has a strange mouth as does the tetra but the platty looks a little strange with a clamped fin which it hardly moves.

My tank is 125 litres with internal filtration by means of a fluval 3 and an interpet pf4. Water changes of 25% are done weekly. Current stocking levels are 2 zebra danios, 1 angel,2 pearl gourami, 4 neons (cant see the 5th) 3 bulldog plecs, 3 silver tip tetras and 12 platties and 1 japonica shrimp.

Water sample results are - pH 7.0, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0 and Nitrate 10

I add maintenace dose of nutrafin cycle weekly and tetramin plant food monthly. All water changes are done with aqua plus tap water conditioner.

I am wondering if it's a bacterial infection and what to treat with.... Any advice will be greatly appreciated..

Thanks JJ

I think they are asking for a water test for the water stats, Ammonia, nitrAte, nitrIte and pH

Well the gourami has passed away and so has the platty.
The gourami had clouded eyes both with a yellow tinge and the platty looked quite normal.
Someone at work said it may be my gravel that is going stagnant as its quite deep and i dont have under gravel filtration any ideas anyone? I will move some rocks and have a good vac over it all.

The growth on the mouth did it look like a cauliflower. Or a tumour
Check the gills to see if there pale with excess mucas on them or red and inflamed.
Any excess mucas on the body of the fish.
Any tiny white spot or yellow spots, or golden patches that glow up.
Turn tanks lights out and shine a torch on the fish too see if any golden spots or patches glow up.
Cloudy eye is a symtom of a desease not a desease in its own right.
Causes, bad water quality, stress, old age, irration, bad diet, parasites, bacterial

Hi Wilder
Yes the growth did look a little like a cauliflower
Gills look fine from what i can see
No visible excess mucas however the platty that died did look like it had extra mucas
no spots of any kind or patches that glow up

Just done another water test and results are

pH 8 (gone up a little), Amm 0, No2 0, No3 0. Maybe thats the new plants kicking in..

I dont think its that Wilder but thanks for the link.
The rest of them look fine although they are flicking a bit could be parasitic i suppose from the plants.
I was going to use protozin but i have a shrimp any ideas anyone?

Might of been a tumour then.

Signs of parasites are.
Flicking and rubbing.
Sometimes labour breathing or gasping at the surface of the tank.
pale gills with excess slime, or red and inflamed gills.
Excess slime on body of fish.
Sores on the body of the fish.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
darting, or erratic swimming.
White size grains of salt spots on fish.
bluish film on fish.
Yellow golden spot on fish, gold dusting on fish, rusty coloured varnish on fish.
Fish look like they have been dusted in talc.

They are flicking and some of the platties have a gasp now and then at the surface they seem to be the only symptoms though.

Cheers Shane

What do the fish gills look like.
How many fish are flicking, and are they flicking alot.
Added anyhing to the tank lately in meds or plant food.
Is there enough aeration in the tank.

Just a few of the platties and the angel flick occasionally
Their gills look ok to me
I added some tetramin plant food last weekend with the new plants, no meds added
I have the venturi running on the fluval 3 for extra aeration but the water surface is quite agitated anyway

Hows the other fish mouth. Does it look bleached out, or fluffy, or cotton strands.
As bacterial infections can make fish flick and heavy breath.
