i have 250 ltr, 54 gal (aprox) and all of my 12 rummynose tetras are hiding under a rock with pale-ish noses along with there black and white flecks on tail. ammonia is 0pp, nitrite is 0 ppm and nitrate is about 6 ppm. i have a few live plants and rocks, a plastic ornament + a eheim jager 150w heater (set at 25 degrees celcius / 77 degrees fahrenheit) along with a eheim pro 3 2073 filter. i do not dose tank with anything apart from stress coat + stress zyme (dout it does anything but it wont hurt) when doing a 30% water change once a week.

Help is appreciated... thanks :)

How old is your tank? Tetras do not do well in new tanks (newer than 6 months). What else is in the tank? Could something be bullying them?

no that is all, i got these fish before i knew about cycling and could not take them back to do a fishless. i have tryed my best to cycle with such a small form of ammonia in a big tank and i am now confident that it has been cycled. the tank is around 4-5 months old.

thanks

is the heater big enough?

yes it is for a tank between 200 - 300 L and , my tank is 250 L.

How long have you had the rummy's in there? 4-5 months ago?
When did then start hiding? Has there been any decor/planting changes?
At first glance I would say get some more plants in there, the rummy's may want more cover to feel like roaming about more freely...
The fish look fine to me, still more red on the nose than some I've seen

posted on your identical topic in the other section too...

when i first got the tank i let it sit 4 about 4 days then got 10 rummynoses, none died. about 2 1/2 months later i decided to get 5 more. they lasted for about 2 days before 1 died, one day later i woke up and another one had died, and again 1 after that. thay all seemed to have large eyes. i thought of pop eye but decided if there was another death i would treat the tank. but no more deaths :) , i came to the conclusion of a big PH change as i did a 30% water change after 2 weeks without touching the tank. fish have been doing this behavior for about a week. I had a heater problem and got it looked at for three days. i got a loan shi**y heater from the shop as a replacement. it seemed that in the three days of having the other heater the temperature dropped by about 2 degrees Celsius. Since the deaths i have been doing irreguler water changes more often but less volume (3 buckets instead of 7 as i thought the PH would change too much).

Thanks

EDIT: Yes will get plants today.

What pH is your tap water? like wise what's your tanks? It may not be ideal for the fish but I think it is more about any pH swing than anything else. The fish seem okay based on their colouration though.

I'd also recommend getting some wood in there, it would look nice, and may bring the pH down a little too...if not then it will still look good!
Might be nice to have a black background on that tank too, those rummy's will contrast nicely against it, if they venture out :)

p.s. you need to close down one of these topics you have...ask the admin to merge the two maybe?

Do you have a test kit? First thing I do when I suspect something is going wrong in the tank is to test. Honestly, there are people that go for more than 2 weeks between water changes and they do fine, so unless you have really soft water, that might not have been it. Judging by the calcium deposits on your glass above the waterline, you probably have sufficient minerals to resist a pH drop.

To correctly diagnose this problem we need to know your pH, lighting schedule, and feedings (do they eat and how aggressively if they do.)

I have an API master test kit, PH is 7.4, ammonia is 0 ppm, Nitrite is 0 ppm and nitrate is 6 ppm (was 10 ppm but did a water change). my tap PH (around midday) is 7.6. I turn on the lights (2 tubes - 8000K and 16,000K) at 8:00am in morning and turn them off at 4:30pm at night, tank is getting 8 and a half hours a day. I have been terrible with feeding (2 times a day) and have just recently cut down to once a day (small ammount of Nutrafin Max tropical fish pellets. When i come in they race to the top where i feed them and dart around trying to snatch it of others (but not always... if they see an 'un-occupied' piece. after a big feed (without anything dropping to the bottom) they sometimes float at the floor by the filter intake.

Thanks heaps :)

They look healthy to me. Just add some more cover. They should start roaming the tank freely.

thanks, it's just i don't have any explanation to why they only just started doing it (the last week).

I will get some plants and wood.

cheers

Could be they matured a little and just start exhibiting more normal behaviour for tetra?

It will be nice to see them roam around amongst some plants :)

Looking at this from a slightly different angle to previous posts, has anything changed in activity outside the tank recently?

Perhaps the room is being used more; vibrations and noise are coming through from the kitchen; the pet cat is eyeing up a snack
