So whats the deal with you people over in the UK? You guys don't have like generic tanks? I always see you guys talking about Jewel, Rio, Aqua and so on tanks, and these are freaking expensive. For what most of you guys are paying for these 40 or so odd gallon tanks, I could get a 125 with everything; hood, filter(s), heater(s), and all the tank decorations and fish stocking. It's really quite rediculous IMO what you guys are paying........

Not everyone buys those, I get mine from smaller people, and the Rena, Jewel etc tanks do come with stands and hoods and often filters.

Also remember that things cost more in the UK, but the average wage in the UK is higher too. The higher wage doesn't cover the difference, but we get the most important things (Tunze) at cheaper prices than you, not to mention we have far easier access to the better German products.

I paid £120 for my 6x2x2 which works out a lot in dollars these days as the dollar has bombed against foreign currency (I remember when it was barely $1.30 to the £ and a dollar would buy more than 1 Euro - that is no more).

yup...some of us value quality :p

Quality is the tank is clear, keeps the fish happy, and doesnt leak water all over the floor. Im sorry if you think with just spending money, your automatically getting quality. Thats why some people in the world are billionaires, cause they trick people to buy crap for alot of money

to each his own.
quality is based on years of experience in making the products without any report of massive recalls and complaints.

let the tight-wad tests the cheap models :)

I've been saying this for years but people like the convienience of the package tanks and believe the fish shop sales pitch about these tanks being better etc etc.

I set up my 200 gallon tank for less than the price of a 100 gallon juwel (rio 400), total cost of equipment and the stand was £480, it could have been less but i used expensive high impact resistent plastic for covers since the tank was to contain a large arowana.
So that was almost 3 times the tank for over £100 less, add to this that my filters are eheims and heaters were visitherms compared to the second rate rubbish that juwel supply and you can clearly see that people are being ripped off.

edit

I know masses of people that have had problems with juwel equipment, all the electrical equipment supplied is sub standard, the lighting bars on the rio 300 and 400 models had a design fault that made them gather condensation inside the sealed unit and eventually blew the lights up, the heaters are famous for the thermostats sticking and again the rio models had a problem with the bracing bars snapping, not what you expect from a package costing in excess of £400

Thank you, thats what I'm trying to say, because people are lazy and suppliers know this, they take you to the bank and give you crap in return

As a tank manufacturer for the last 33 years and one of the sponsors of this furum, I take exception to you generalisation regarding suppliers. Whilst your comments may indeed be true regarding some suppliers, I can assure you that is not the case altogether. I have customers who have been buying from me (and still are) for 30 years or more. Need I say any more?

id never buy a branded tank from a shop as i agree the prices are just rediculas!

often aswell im after something specific and the "factory" tanks just dont cut the mustard or require heavy modification to do what i want them to do!!

i do have a jewel tank as it happens a rio 400, but i bought it second hand in great condition for £80 which is much more reasonable but of all the crap that comes with it ive replaced the lights, filter, heater, pumps for better upgraded options as i also agree the stuff you get with them just isnt up to scratch!

with the internet the prices are now coming down we are getting there in the uk but its a slow process and now we are still paying a premium

oh well the price you pay for loving your fish!

Windsor, since you are a supplier of custom built aquariums which are not available from any retail outlets your products are exempt from this discussion, the aquariums in point here are the mass produced packages from companies such as juwel, rena and fluval, many of which are vastly over priced for what you are actually getting (laminated chip board stand and cheap "made in taiwan" electricals). My comments are actually in favour of buying a tank built by someone such as yourself (as i have indeed done as you made and delivered my 6x2x2) and then buying the filtration, heaters and lighting as seperate items.

I am sorry for any confusion, though to be honest i fail to see where there could be any :S

It's good that we have suppliers like windsor, because if not then we would either need to become master tank builders (which I am trying to become) to do anythign out of the ordinary, or sell one of our children to get it from the big package companies.

i paid 600 for my first tank (rena aqualife 222) and although i wish i`d thought of looking on ebay i`m quite happy with it as it is a really beautiful tank and looks like such a nice piece of furniture in the front room

id love to be able to build my own tanks!! anyone wanna teach me? most ive ever built is a little acrylic water container!!
