Whats With The Uk

the problem with home made stands and hoods they dont look that great in the living room ok you can paint varnish or stain them but they always let waterin if they are made out of wood and the doors swell from the small amount of water you forgot to wipe up

ah-ha not true with regards to home made stands and hoods. its where the good old PVA glue comes in very very handy. three coats - acts like a varnish but creating a plastic like water tight seal. I suppose for the home made it all comes down to the skills and knowledge at hand. a master craftsman will produce something far superior to that of a jewel stand.

sadly though, im not a master craftsman and so my first attempt hood is functional, but alas, the design of a replacement is underway and it will be built in my fathers workshop with the care and skill to make it a piece to envy.

Actually I find the commercially made stands & hoods are built to minimum specifications for holding an aquarium. The finish is nothing to write home about either. I'm no master craftsman, I haven't had wood shop since I was 14. I do have a couple decades of home improvement experience, I'm too cheap to pay people to do something I can do myself. This stand & hood is going on 3 years old, I don't trust any mass produced overpriced junk in my living room;

I got a 72 gallon with a commercially made stand for free, it's in the basement family room, I just set it up a few days ago. If I remember I'll take some pics of the inside of that, and of the inside of the one I built.

150 quid for an aqua one 620 fully kitted out with a stand is not probitive and it looks cool-money well spent i say :good:
