Ok, so the question is.. when can I add 6 more odessa barbs?

If you can contain your excitement, this Friday perhaps, just a fraction under a fortnight since getting the original six?

(while the tank is new, its far safer to try and add new fish fortnightly to avoid toxin spikes, plus it will also give you more time to research fish that have a temprement/temp/water conditions similar to those fish you already have)

How have the original six settled in? Have the males started to "colour-up" with all those lovely reds, yellows amd oranges?

I knew you were going to say that! :grr: I can. I was figuring that they are still pretty shy and would be more 'comfortable' in a larger group. I can tell the two males, but no, they really haven't colored up yet.

I'd love a larger group of them, but they seem to hang out at the bottom... so then all my fish would be bottom fish. Yes, I will spend some time researching more. Thanks!

+8 more Odessa Barbs (1m, 7f). (asked for 6, but guy threw in 2 freebies) They are not as shy anymore and the 3 males I have are coloring up nice now. Happy comes with numbers!

I will do a water change today.

Blimey, 14 Odessas, you must upload some pics sometime soon!

That water change you have planned today will need a large change (like 75%), but I'm sure from others like myself nagging, you already knew that ;)

Did that ammonia reading come before or after adding the 8 new fish? If before, I would be very concerned, as it suggests something has gone wrong with the bacteria colonies supporting you original 7 loaches and 6 Odessas. If after, you need to be very conservative with food over the next few days, as almost doubling the fish stock will put massive strains on the bacterial colonies.

I have a gut feeling that either way, you and any helpers are going to have to daily water changes in excess of 75% for the next week...

Any helpers... you're funny!!! :grr: The test was after the fish had been in there for a bit.

Yes, just got done with a 75% water change. Whew!

Please excuse the fake plants and brown bottom. As you can tell, I am worried about what people might think of it. I've seen some awesome tanks here and know that mine doesn't measure up!

The females have the red fins & the males' fins are striped.

Here is a picture of some of them. They are so curious!!! :good:

:bump:

Been doing 75% water changes. Males all colorful. During the water changes, my hand gets nibbled... a lot! :D Kids LOVE that!

The fish look lovely (meant to write this some time ago, but I've been a bit stressed with money issues plus I've had a cold, a great combo for me becoming forgetful)!

Hopefully a week or so on since getting the new 8 Odessas, the bacterial colonies should now have caught up, giving you "double zeros?" (Although youe last post about doing 75% water changes suggests there are still some issues).

That gravel syphon looks rather familar, makes water changes quite effective and painless, when used with a 3+ gallon bucket

Money issues all around! That is very stressful!

75% water changes are addicting... just can't stop myself! Actually, it's not every day... the tests are not bad. Just want to make sure that we have good water in there!

Yes, 2 - 5 gallon buckets to be exact! But, the 'ball' in the syphon fell out yesterday so I'm going to have to figure something else out. I had to 'improvise' on my 2nd tank yesterday and that wasn't too fun.
