I have noticed these nasty 'orrable brown patches developing on my plants (I don't know what plants they are).

I don't know if the image will work... If it does, could someone please identify the problem for me and offer a remedy.

Its an Amazon Sword and the brown dots are damaged ares on the leaves. Can be caused by fish or rough handling, or just generally the plant starting to die

Oh, and another thing... I have this other picture. It hasn't been set up long but could someone please identify all these plants for me and if you can see the rocks? I haven't seen any since I bought them years ago. I don't know what type they are but would like some more.
One thing I totally disapprove of is a mix n' match of tank decor.

Thanks for your rapid responce, Dark. Thing is, I've hardly touched the plants. What can I do to make the plant happier?

Ok, from what I can tell, going left to right...

Looks like a mini Vallis, possible vallis spiralis (mini-twister) on the left
Egeria/Elodea Densa behind that and to the right of it, and behind the pot (tall spikey looking plant)
Another type of vallis infront of the pot I think
Java fern behind the pot in the background
Can't make out the small round leafed plant infront of the fern
Amazon sword is the broad leafed plant (with the brown spots :()
On the right looks like cabomba but I'm not sure.

Thats my best guesses :)

The brown spot might be a lack of nutrients. Do you put any fertilisers or anything into the water for the plants? Could you list your tank setup, ie light wattage, tank size/volume? Would help if people need to suggest things :)

Edit: I have to say, I'm not usually a fan of "fake" decor (I don't mean that in a nasty way!). I prefer the natural look with a bit of wood, or river stone, that kind of thing. I think you've achieved a look that is really nice! It really suits, with the colours and the pot. Good job :)

Fish nibbling will do the same, i wouldnt worry about it.

I do worry though, I want the best tank in my house!
No seriously though I am concerned because thats how we improve our skills as an aquarist.

Thank you DevUK. I'll note all that for refrance purpose.

Thank you very much indeed, DevUK
I must confess though, I don't know where to start with plant food's etc. As for the tank set up. I'll have to look it up on the net as to the wattage n' stuff.
The tank is a Rio 300 by Juwel. Its a 300 litre tank.
Any advice, DevUK, will be relished.

Si

This is te tank stuff direct off the Juwel site

1 x High-Lite Light Unit 120 cm, 2 x 54 W
1 x Pump Set 1000
1 x Heater 300 Watt

You're welcome :)

Ok, so you have 108watts of light, over a rio 300, which is approx 79 gallons (US). Doing the WPG sum (Watts/Gallons=WPG) = 1.37wpg. Now, the WPG rule is a toughey. Its more of a guide than a rule ;) 1.3 wpg is pretty respectable over a large tank like that. The bigger tanks get, the less light is really needed (though you couldn't just have a silly 18w light over it if you want plants ;))

I would honestly recommend digging out some of George Farmer's posts about his low light setup. Its a Rio 125 and its fantastic. He uses a light fertilising routine and its quite low maintenance.

Other than that, posts to read are ones regarding EI (Estimative Index). Theres a good sticky post at the top of this planted forum. I was helping someone else with the idea of ferts in another thread, my post is here. Its only basic guidance, but the rest of the guys here will be able to help out if you decide what you want to do, if anything ;)

I have to say, there is some trial and error involved too ;) Read the basics and get a feel for what your plants might want from you and take it from there!

Right, I'm going to drink some beer and watch a pool match. Back later if you have any questions ;)

If its a new set-up it's possible the brown patches are algae, are you sure its a dead area and not something you can rub off?

Otherwise like already said its most likely a lack of nutrients, Swords are Iron heavy feeders from the roots from what I remember so you may want to get some root tabs.

I took a better look half an hour ago. They are indeed holes. Would I just put a root tab under the plant?DevUK....WHOOSH....Most of that went over my head. But I'll endeavour to find out what exactly you mean.I'll check out the posts you refare to.Cheers.Si

Yeah with a root tab you just push them into the gravel, never used them my substrate has all I need. You push them in every once in a while from what I have read.
