I think my most intelligent would be my keyhole cichlids.. my senegal bichir seems to be pretty smart.. as does my african brown knife.

What type of fish THAT YOU HAVE would you say is the most intelligent? :fish:

i only have bettas. so i'll say my betta bruce. whenever i'm in the room he hangs at the top of one corner of his tank, begging for food, and flares at me when i don't get him some pronto. when i do give him some he jumps out the water for it. bless! i don't know if that's intelligence...but it's cute none the less!

I am going to have to say that my angels are my smarter ones. That means they swim to the the front of the tank everytime I walk into a room, and they usually only do it if it is me. I have had people walk in there and say your fish just hang out in the back how borring. Then when I walk in there they come to the front. I don't know if they can tell if it is me or not, but it sure seems like it. My dumbest fish would have to be my school of cardinals. They just hang out in the back and swim around, and it usually takes them about 30 seconds before they relize that they are getting fed. They look good though. I guess that is how this world works, brains over looks

My Kois and goldfish are smarter then all the trops. Sad but true.

I love the zebra danios, they come get in my hand to be fed if I drop a few flakes in my hand they swim right in and rest on me to eat, that is cute but it's also VERY stupid, in the wild they would be history in seconds if I was a predator. Now my Kois will also sit in my hand to be fed, BUT - the Kois have known me for 2 years, they didn't just meet me 2 weeks ago like the danios did. We have a trust bond.

my black widow teras are quite smart, they all gather around the hood opening around 5 minutes before feeding time, you can set your watch by them.

I think you may have a very good point there SuzieQ. What we label intelligent may not be all that intelligent; IME it tends to be whatever flatters us as owners. These fish appreciate me- they must be really smart. After all, few of us have the patience to set them doing real problem-solving.

My platys come rushing to eat out of my hand, but I am not sure if this is intelligence as much as plain greed. Having said that, I have known individual platies who are less forward, take longer to find out what is edible, who keep swimming in the wrong direction- and certainly in the fish tank this is less profitable behaviour and they tend not to thrive. In the wild I suppose there might be advantages either way, depending on circumstances.

electric catfish, bangs the stuff around in the tank, when he's hungry, if then not fed, goes to top and contines making lots of noises with its tail. If you go up to it, he stops, if you then ignore for a bit will start all over again, until he has annoyed you into feeding him. oh and he must be smart 'cos he knocked CFC onto his bottom with an electric shock - theres a clever fishy.

Boris (discus) becuase he clearly likes me more than he likes my husband. Clever fishy!

my angelfish start begging fr food when im near the tank and go and sit in the plants and sulk if i dont feed them

My Dojo loach. He is a stalker. He will sit back and look at whats going on and them make a move. He also knows the diff between ghost shrimp in a bag and any other fish in a bag. With a ghost shrimp bag he will swim up and spend the next 14 min trying to open the bag with any means! :hey:

my dads goldfish is smart it lives in a pond it recognises my dad instantly and has figured out how to shake the net over his pond to knock buggs into the water

i think the smartest fish i have is my common pleco because when i feed him cucumber i dont let it sink i leave it float and then he comes to the top sticks to the piece of cucumber and drags it to the bottm and munches away in close 2nd it has to be my metalic green platy when i feed them the platy comes to the top snatches a bit of food and takes it to the cave so none of the other fish can take his food away. lol its funny to watch :D

I would say my Kribs, then my gourami or pleco
