Consider shrimp as live anywhere. A glass would be OK for them. As for the neons, I would say about 8UKG, but tanks don't come in that size, as far as I know, so nearest would be a 10UKG.

I would say, for preference a minimum of a 600mm x 300mm x 300mm tank (about 12 UK gal).


You would, however, be OK on stocking levels with a 450mm x 250mm x 250mm tank (about 8 UK gal). Clear Seal do a tank this size

My Hex with air pump powered UGF is 30L about 26L with everything considered (water level substrate etc..) I have two Platies 2 Neons and 1 Cory and please I know not right and when my Vision 180 setup they will all have more company and better lives!

Anyway, I would have thought the 2 Platies would have been equivalent to at least 3 or 4 neons? and the corry one more maybe?

This last week I had not got round to a water change for two weeks due to a lot on and when I did my stats they were 0 for Ammonia 0 Nitrite and about 7 for Nitrates which I thought was great!

Oh and I got a Limpet which I believe are very fussy of water quality!

IMO neons are very fast schooling fish a 60cm long is a minium, if you want a shoaling species in a smaller tank try WCMM's

and a minimum of 6 per shoal. and they like mature water so were talking 6 months+

White clouds are amazing! Ill never learn the joys of neons because I can have my white clouds for half the price! Very hardy and can live in many water conditions...temps from 58 to 80F

6 neons wil be fine and dandy with some 6-12 cherrys in a 30-40 litre tank try going for the longest you can fit in as they enjoy the surface area as do WC minnows
i would also say WCminnows are more enjoyable to watch than neons i have both and the minnows when displaying are beautiful fish , they are always playing - mine play with the relfections in the tank when the light shines a weird way

so i would get 6 WCminnows in as long a tank as you can and 6-12 cherry shrimp get live plants bogwood and java moss is perfect for shrimps they also like some floating plants - mine enjoy nibbling the roots on frogbit

if you get Wclouds and cherrys you dont need a heater but keep up on the weekly water changes to keep the fish healthy and dont add anything until the tank is cycled - WCminnows are hardier than neons i was lucky i only lost one neon which was dead in the bag by the time i got it home - but many people buy lots and only end up with 1 or 2
due to neons being quite a delicate fish - due to excessive breeding they shouldnt be added to a newly cycled tank

To be precise, 27L is 7.132 gallons and 30L is 7.925. If you have good filtration and a normal maintenance schedule, those would be fine for 6 neons and 3 shrimp. Shrimp are scavengers and will eat left over food so they don't add much to the bio-load.

White clouds are very active fish and really need a larger tank to allow for enough swimming room.

Isn't it fun when you have people like me talking in UK gallons and then people like rdd1952 talking US gallons

When gallons are mentioned, it is generally considered US gallons as all stocking guidelines (yes the old 1" per gallon thing) are based on US gallons. Actually, to me, US gallons are a lot easier to convert from liters since it is roughly 4 liters per gallon (3.785 to be exact). It makes for pretty easy conversion if someone says they have a 200 liter tank, you can quickly divide 200 by 4 and roughly figure that to be a little more than 50 gallons (52.834) without having to do a lot of converting.
