hi, we are going on hols for a fortnight in august and its will be the first time we have left our large tank before. Whats the best to do with regards to feeding them while we are away, Looked into the automatic feeders but they are not very good my mother in law will come down to feed them but she doesnt have any idea when it comes to tropical fish. Would it be best to only feed them every couple of days, I have a rather a large angel fish that i dont want to get to hungry incase it decides to try and eat my platties. Also with regards to a water change we always do a 20% water change every week would it be best to do a 30-40% change before we go or would it be ok till we come home just doing a normal 20% before we go.

well your in the wrong section first off. this needs to go in the tropical discussion section. hopefully ski will see this and move it for ya

But, if your mother in law feeds them every other day or maybe 2 times a week they will be fine. they could prob go as whole week without food and fe fine... but I wouldnt chance to two weeks. less feeding will also help keep waste production down so you wont have to worry too much about the wc. just do one before you leave and do one the day you get back.

For your mother in law, just write up a little note on what to feed and hopefully she can follow the directions. tell her exactly how much of what you want her to feed when and then you should have no worries.

Ox :good:

thanks not quite sure how i posted it in marine and reef chit chat  but thanks for the advice and i am not sure how to move it

just do a normal water change a couple of days before you go and then get the inlaws to feed the fish once every few days. Measure out the amount of food and put it into containers and put a note on them stating this container only on this day and no other food. Hide all the other food except the stuff that is going to be fed while you're away.

I usually just get a pack of frozen bloodworm or brineshrimp and get whomever is looking after the fish to drop in one or two cubes per day. I use a felt pen (permanent marker) to write how many cubes of food go into each tank. Then all they have to do is read the tank and put the food in.

Happy to move it for you. In the future, you can ask any moderator who is online, or alternatively you can "report" your own thread (using the report button) and in the description, ask if the thread could be moved to the proper section for you.
