i have a new 90 gallon and im curious ... what fish should i get!!!

What are the dimensions of the tank? Is your tank water hard or soft?? As in what is the PH level of your water? What filtration will you have or have you got on the tank? What fish are you interested in? Would you want a peaceful community, oddball, SA/CA cichlid setup, Malawi cichlids, predatory, single predictor? List is endless

Also make sure you have a read of the fish less cycle thread in the beginners section. Then complete your fish less cycle before you add any fish. This can tank anywhere to 12 weeks or more but can be considerably quicker of you were to get hold of some mature filter media.

The possibilities with that size of tank are endless, start by telling us what type of fish you like best?

Also do you want to keep live plants? and what filter will you be using? also we will need answers to dbanner's questions. :good:

thanks for the great knowledgable responses, i will be cloning my 25 gallon, im running a fluval 205 and a fluval 305, the tank is 48 inches long 18 inches in width and 25 inches in length , rite now i have a 25 gallon which houses a rainbow shark , a goldfish (i know i know) , 1 phantom tetra , 1 molly , and 2 guppies. i plan to move them to the 90 gallon and have a community fishtank.

im going to start letting the fluval 305 run on the 25 gallon soon so it could build up some bacteria and then transfer the substrate from the 25 gallon to the new 90 gallon, so hopefully everything will go good, i just got a used 90 gallon on craigslist and i had to reseal it , i tested the new seals for a couple of days and thank god i have 0 leaks , in the next few days i plan to set it up

i really want a fire eel! can someone make a stock up for me with a fire eel ( its ok if he eats the guppies and molly)

1st off the rainbow shark will appreciate the extra room in the 90gal as the min tank size for 1 is a 55gal.

I can't see the 205 and 305 being enough filtration. You are aiming for 4-5x your tanks water volume (so around 1750LPH) so IMO if you were to get 2 x 305's instead that would be perfect.

As you know the goldfish shouldn't be in a tropical tank as the heated water will speed up their metabolism.

As for the fire eel it will eat any fish small enough to fit in its mouth which in this case would be the guppies, Molly and tetra... Maybe even the goldfish and shark depending on what size they are and how big the eel will be.

Good tank mates for fire eels are those that are too big to fit in its mouth.. A group of spanner barbs or silver dollars would be a good choice. Or another fish that iv seen kept with fire eels in SA/CA cichlids. In a 90gal you could possibly have a medium sized cichlid or 2 such as firemouth, salvini, green terror, texas, blue acara and then maybe a small plec such as a clown plec, bulldog, bristlenose, snowball or golden nugget
