I'm away to buy a tank roughly 100-120 litres, i'm trying to plan everything prior to purchase.

I was initially thinking about a betta to base my tank around but its too risky in case it's too aggresive and limits my fish choices a lot so I thought I'd just get a separate 5 gallon for the betta.

Can anyone suggest some attractive reasonably sized centre piece fish for me to base my tank around?

did you want one or two larger fish as a centerpiece or a school of smaller fish?
are you looking for a 'safe' community or smoething more challenging?

ok then
dwarf gouramis come in lots of colours from neon blue to red.
if you like those what about other gouramis like lace, opaline or perhaps even a moonlight gourami
a pair of any of those will give you a nice centerpeice, then you can build your other stocking levels around them.
perhaps a school of harliquins or other rasbora for a touch of movement, or better still one of the many danios species available
(see my sig for my website) and a nice group of corys or loaches as your bottom dwellers.

add a smallish plec (see pleco forum for 30 plecos under 8") for help keeping the tank clean and you are set.

i would say a pearl gourmie for that size tank its a beautiful fish and will make a nice center :)

as for bettas they can do well in a community i have one and ironically its best friend who he never leaves the side of is my blue male dwarf gourmie tho i sorta feel bad for the female dwarf as the male only hangs with my betta now lol :)

yea i have heard they can fit in a community tank but it is risky as you can't really tell if it's going to be aggresive towards other fish until you have it in the tank :(

i read somewhere that having a pair of gouramis can make the female stressed and its better to get 2 females, is this true?
