Popping around to different posts, I was reading about mollies. And I read they need salt?!?!? I was thinking about getting some but I can't put salt in my tank because of the cories and pictus. So can I still get mollies (and maybe swordtails too) without salt?

Another thing, I saw a picture of a balloon molly (which I'd never seen before) and something called a short bodied guppy, plus these guppies with really, really long fins in the front, so I'm wondering if there is a site somewhere that tells the different kinds, cause now I'm confused. Who knew there were that many different types? I feel like I've been dumped into the deep end of the pool all of a sudden.

Liveaquaria.com should be able to help you out for partial info. It says that they can adapt to be fresh or slatwater fish...Poeple tend to say it's beneficial for the fish, so it isn't necessary, but they might prefer it...

I have mollies without salt, was considering adding some when my tank become's a complete molly tank, but thought If there born in fresh they don't know any different, my be a little happier, but I have my fist litter due so must be doing something right without salt. :D

I occassionally add aquarium salt into my tank. When I purchased it my LFS told me that is was not a necessary thing for mollies to have, but that it really was a good idea.

Hmm, if they are raised in fresh then it shouldn't be bad for them, I'd like them to have it but the catfish.... Maybe I'll just stick to guppies and swordtails until I make up my mind.

(Except I don't have swordtails yet haha)

Thanks!

Balloon bellies don't really need salt. Sailfins do alot better with it. It all kinda of boils down to where they come from. But most mollies can adapt to no salt.

Cool, because I like the ballon mollies for some reason more than the regular, I just wish I knew why....

Oh yea to confuse you even more. There is two types of ballon bellies also. There is the lyretail BB that gets very big 4 to 5 inches, like the sailfin molly. Then there is what I call the mini bb, it has no lyretail and does not get as big. They only get about 2 inches. There is not alot of info on the net about balloons. But there is alot about mollies. Mollies are easy to keep and so so easy to breed.

Hmm, I guess I'll take whatever I can get a hold of...

I heard that about guppies too.... I get so mad at my fish sometimes, I mean COME ON!!! I feed them plenty, a huge tank, and still, four fry in three months. Maybe I'll threaten them with balloon mollies.

"Shape up or I'm sicking the mollies after you!"

HAHAHA, I just thought of something, if I get a bunch of balloon mollies, I call the whole group The Zeppelins!!!

The biggest one gets called Hindenburg!

 Oh I'm a sick sick person...

In the last year had around 700 Balloon belly fry go threw my house. So they aren't hard to breed but kind of easy. But you do need a good fry tank for them so they don't ate, and they like a good mix of veggy and protien.

Good to know, now it's a quest to actually find them around here....
