I'm possibly going to purchase a 5 x 2 x 2 tank at the weekend, £160. 2 eheim filters (not sure which model), 2 heaters stand etc, the works.

I'm possibly looking at a mbuna setup, but, hypethetically speaking, what would you put in the tank.

i'd personally go with planted discus / south american theme, but thats just me

I'll give you £200 for it?

LOL

What do most like about fish keeping?

You want pure relaxation? as much personality as possible? lots of breeding and fry? parental care of fry? Plants? Rocks? Bog-Wood? Big fish, small fish? Expensive, cheap, average costs? As much colour as you can get your hands on? Meat eaters? veggies? predators?

Community / Species set-up?

Fish that suit your tap water? willing to spend more on adjusting tap water if needed?

Thats just some of the things i would be asking a mate so to speak if someone asked.

How exciting!!!!

We'll, if i get it, i'm being swayed towards an mbuna setup, love the fish, reading up on them, they seem like very interesting fish, but, having said that, oscars!!!!!

If i had a community, it would be something different i think, old world cichlids. But then theres so many options. GUPPY FARM lol!!!

peeps gonna have different views, which is great, but one of mine is

dont include live-bearers (traditional ones i mean), just too much of a pain in the rear with disease risk, wouldnt trust them in big tank, too much to risk, i am not saying they only fish that get diseases, i am just playing the percentages here based on experience

i have a 300 litre with live-bearers but its taken ages to get it this settled with mostly F1 and home grown stock

just my view........

I know the Guppy thing was a joke, just saying. My advice if you end up going community-type fish, strike off Guppies, Platies, Mollies and Swordtails.

I've got a few tanks that are busy, if it were my 5x2x2 i would go Oscars or something, a set up with just a few fish that get a big bigger than your average community fish. But i've already got a Malawi, if my Malawi tank smashed tonight (touch wood), i would set up another one, love it!!!!

If i do get it it's going to be a project, will take a few months due to budget and of course the fishless cycle. Definately livebearers a no no.

If i did set-up a african cichlid tank, may ask for some advice fry_lover. What are the malawi's like???? Personality, difficulty to keep, etc.

So no marines then?

I'd love to do a marine tank, but i think it would be way out of my budget at the moment. Say i got the tank, what would the setup costs be, just the hardware, no fish, rocks etc included.

You've got a massive amount of options Malawi wise for a 5x2x2 and being in Herts i am almost certain your tap-water will be similar to mine which is good news for the Malawi

Spend sometime in the Malawi forum on here, you'll get some really good advice on how to set up from peeps that know more than me, i can only speak for myself, i have done an updated thread on my tank, go to "my topics" from my profile.

I'll help where i can mate
