I'm hoping someone might be able to allay my fears about an unfortunate fish death yesterday.

I went to the Maidenhead Aquatics shop in Norwich yesterday morning before work to pick up a lovely Koi Angel and Platinum Angel that I'd had my eyes on for a while. Both were about 4" in size and looking great.

I got them home (only 10 minutes away), aclimatised them like always and released both into their new home (4ft community with some very small (<1") Angels and some other peaceful community fish) and they both appeared to be fine.

I went to work and after a 7 hour shift came home, to be told by my husband that the Koi Angel had died three hours after being put in the tank. He had watched it struggling and kept an eye on it but it apparently just keeled over and died, with no bullying or picking on by the other fish in the tank.

The Platinum Angel is more than happy, as are all of the other fish but I am now in a bit of a tricky situation...

...normally, it would be easy enough to ring up and speak to the store about the death and get it sorted, but as it's Easter Sunday today they are not open. I will call them as soon as they open tomorrow morning, but I'm worried that too much time will have passed to do anything about it?

Anybody have any experience with sorting out deaths with Maidenhead? What guarantee do they have on fish stock?

I'm obviously happy to provide a water sample etc, and with the other fish being more than happy I can only assume the Koi Angel just didn't cope with being moved??

He did cost me quite a few pennies, which shouldn't be important, but it is as it was an Easter present of sorts from the husband, and it seems a shame to have lost one :(

Any help would be very much appreciated!!

I would think that you local MA will give you a credit note or whatever they do. I've never had to go and try and get money/credit back. I think P@H give a 7 day guarentee... I THINK. I would ring and ask them what to do, they may ask for a water sample and if nothing is amiss with it then i can't see there being an issue. It's unfortunate that things like this happen over the b/h as it does make it rather awkward.

Sorry for your loss

The bank holiday is the main thing that concerns me...any other day and I wouldn't be so worried about it.

Like I said in my first post, I wish the money wasn't a factor in it for me..but the poor old Angel did cost a fair amount and it's a shame to see it come to nothing.

The Platinum Angel is currently bobbing along with the other Angels and it's a shame the Koi Angel can't be doing the same.

Thanks for your input :)

Something similar happened to me, I bought a Golden Nugget pleco from my local MA which seemed fine until the next morning when I found it unexplicably dead, all the other fish were ok.I was gutted it was a lovely fish.
I managed to ring MA but had to tell them that due to work commitments I could not return the dead fish until the weekend, they were understanding and upon my next visit (dead fish in a bag) I was refunded the full amount.
Fish are fragile creatures and don't always take to their new habitat for one reason or another its sad but I believe most fish keepers will have at some point experienced this.

What I would do if I was you, I would ring them a couple of times today anyway on a mobile. Obviously nobody will answer but by having a couple of call logs to them on your phone surly if they dispute the time lapse you can show them the call log and explain that you tried to contact them and they wasn't open.

Saying that however I would expect them to offer you credit anyway as it's obvious you had know option to contact them earlier. The mobile phone log will just act as insurance :good:

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the help and tips. Great thinking with the mobile phone idea..did call them a couple of times earlier on the off chance that they might be shunning Easter and actually be open

Not much remains of the old chap, although he is in the freezer. Looks like a Plec got to him quite quickly after his death and before hubby scooped him out of the tank.

Slightly late closure on this one, but after a water test and a bit of humming and harring they agreed to give a credit note.

Ended up buying 6 Dwarf Neon Rainbows..who look lovely :)
