I was woundering what I would need to start breeding angelfish. I would only have one pair and work my way up with that pair...And guess who one of the angelfish in that pair is going to be?..........KOPIX!!!!He is so pretty and if I can find a mate that is good enough for him then I am set! :D
I know that this idea of mine is not going to be easy but I just want to try and see if I can't do well breeding angelfish. I only am going to breed one kind of angelfish and that is going to be koi. I want to slowly add more and more orange to the mix until I have super koi angelfish!hahhaha cool dream eh? Well I just want to create a new angelfish color strand!I know I will need several tanks and some kick a** filters but what else do I need to do this thing? :dunno:

A tank of at least 20gallons, broad leafed plants (like amazon sword or ungle val) or a piece of slate if you do not have a live plant set up will be where the parents lay the eggs (some times on the glass wall too). Set the tank up useing hagen's aqua clear 20 or the equivalent.

You may need a separate rasing tank if the adults do not care for the young (common in first time parents). In this case you will need to take the eggs out of the parent tank and place them in the rearing tank with an air stone near the eggs to circulate water (oxygen).

http://www.webrbiz.com/angelfish/home.html Will tell you the bare minimum you need to start. Depending on the size you can sell them, the size of the spawns, and how severly you cull, you could get by with as little as 100 gallons of tank space. I suggest 200 gallons, as the market is unpredictable, and there are going to be some you want to keep as future breeders.

http://angelsonly.com/hatchery.htm Shows a large in-home setup. I believe he is selling his gear, if you have a lot of spare money laying around, drop him a line.

The most important thing you can do is research, start with the local market, see if there is a demand for angels in your area, & how many. Read everything, online, in the library, anywhere you can find. Plan on spending 4 hours per week or more just on the angel setup, more if you plan on doing a line breeding setup, which is what you will have to do if you are working towards a new strain. Make sure you have an understanding family & employer.

Plan on a minimum of $500 to get started, build as much of your own gear as possible, and have patience. From fry to breeding age takes at least 9 months, it will be a year before you see any results of your attempts to get an improvement in the fish you are breeding.

I agree with tolaks info, angel fish breeding is a time, money and space consuming experience and not somthing to be taken on by the under prepared- finding somwhere that will take dozens and dozens of angle fish is one of the most important things as well as having space for them yourself- no lfs will take on more than 30angels in a fortnight unless they are a very large lfs that has a large demand for them.
