I had 2 red robin gouramis, and one has died after getting weak being constantly chased by the other one.

Now the remaining one, Fifi, is getting very big, and I'm wondering if Fifi is in fact a thick lipped gourami. I have tried putting in some guppies and 2 other honey gouramis, but Fifi is also chasing those. Fifi has now been relegated to the hospital tank.

I don't want to get rid of Fifi, as I have become quite attached to her despite her bad temper. So I've decided to buy a new tank for her! Thinking of getting a 5-10 gallon tank as I don't really have the space for much more.

Are there any other types of fish that Fifi MIGHT get on with? It would seem a waste to have to buy one new tank and equipment (spending over £100) just for one fish.

The only other things currently in the tank that Fifi doesn't bother with are the corydoras, neon tetras and amano shrimp. However, if there are other fish out there I'd like to get them instead so I have a variety between the two tanks.

When you say red robin gourami i assume you mean the red morph of a dwarf gourami. In my opinion (and experience) 2 dwarf gouramis can never and should never live together and 2 male DGs are a recipe for disaster.

As for other fish that can live with them... anything that doesn't look like them. Preferably smaller fish than them e.g tetras, barbs etc.or bottom dwellers. But def no more gouramis and your probably better off not having any surface dwellers depending on the size of your tank.

My DG is my fave fish and my most aggressive despiten being in a tank full of cichlids.. the thing is as all my fish are bigger but less aggressive than him they are just unfazed by his temeper tantrums and just drift out of his way and don't fight back.

Good luck :good:

Hello, I believe red robins are a variety of the honey gourami.
They are not dwarf gourami, though are a similar size.

Well i guess they have similar tempraments and requirements... your gourami sounds a lot like my DG so i still think what i wrote applies.

I didn't realise DG were aggressive, I had 2 in a tank, one died and I thought oh I will get another to keep it company, and when I put the new one in, my other became very aggressive towards it, fortunately I have other tanks so put it in my big community tank, and it is very happy in there, I do love my DG, I am unsure what sex it is, so cannot call it he or she..lol.

It's not so much that they are aggressive, but they are territorial: each male establishes and defends a territory. And your average tank is only large enough for one territory. It is possible to keep a male + a female (if you can find a female) provided the tank is big enough and has enough hiding places for her to get away from him when they're not "in the mood". Female dgs are much less colourful than the males and many shops don't sell them for that reason.
