Not really any symptoms. They live a week, maximum, then they start resting on the bottom, then they're dead. One mother (platy) died due to what I'm fairly sure was septicemia. The other mom (guppy) is swimming happily to this day (she was a rescue). I never let my water quality get bad, I do a 20% water change once a week or more often if a fish is ill or injured. I know the mothers (above), fathers are a mystery. They don't really have clamped fins, it's just how the pic looks.
Would it be better If I put the fry (if it was just 1) in a fish bowl with gravel, a plant and a light above it for heat?

Hmm, this is a bad situation. I would definately not use a fish bowl. You can actually buy a 10 gallon tank at Walmart for 30$ or less, and it comes with a filter, hood and light. That's where I got mine. You can put an Aquaclear 50-70 sponge on the filter intake to prevent babies from getting sucked up. Fill the tank up halfway, and don't put any gravel in. This is what I'm doing, and my babies are growing quickly.

That's all I can really think of... But wait, you said that their fins are just as clamped as the platies' in the picture? That may be an external parasite still. Look carefully for other symptoms.

I hope this problem gets fixed for you soon, I too, am having a problem with getting fry, so I know how it feels.

Good luck.

Will probably be getting 5 gal tomorrow. :)
It just needs to be smallish so I can fit it on my desk. :) All for one little fry! (Maybe I'll get some cherry shrimp. Do they work in a fry tank?)

Awesome! I myself am getting another 10 gal fry tank! :hyper:

I'm so excited! Because I'm also getting a 55 gal approx. in about a month! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Anyhow, sorry I got sidetracked...

Umm, I actually don't know much of anything about shrimp, though I was too, considering them. I did some research though, and these are some good sites I found: (sorry... )

In other words, yes, you can keep the cherry shrimp in the 5 gallon, but don't expect any babies (from the shrimp) if you are keeping any adult fish in the 5 gallon to give birth.

Cherry shrimp won't eat the babies though.

Don't forget to cycle your tank! :p (Like you would! :X )

Good luck! Congrats on the 5 gallon! I know how exciting it can be!

P.S. Where are you getting the 5 gallon, and how much are you filling it up? Are you putting gravel in?

Have an already cycled spare filter. (I like to have a couple cycled sponge filters in established tanks. Very useful in this type of situation. :) ) And I found 2 more fry today! :p
