Hi everyone,

I am new to this site and new to fish keeping in general.  I've had my fish now for about a month and when I got them, I didn't know anything about them.  I had what I was told were mollies and platies.  My other mollies all look similar as do my platies.  All except this one.  According to what the lady at the store wrote down this one was listed as a platy however it doesn't look like the other platies.  It looks more like the mollies to me as it is much longer and thinner.  I saw one the next time I went to a pet store that looked similar and the lady there said she thought perhaps a female swordtail.  I am just curious what anyone else thinks?  Thanks in advance for any help identifying it.

Swordtail crossed my mind too.  May have been female originally, but I think there are signs it is becoming male (yes, late development can occur, we had another thread or two recently on this).  There is a beginning "sword" on the lower lobe of the caudal fin (tail), and the anal fin seems to be thickened for a gonopodium.

Byron.

Thanks Byron.  I also was looking at how the bottom of the tail looked as if it were beginning to form the sword.  I was just reading up before you answered on the sword only showing up later.  If he's a swordtail would explain why he was kind of seeming like a loner in the tank, although he has seemed to make good friends with one of the female mollies I got a couple weeks ago :)... thanks for the reply!

Pretty fish! That color really pops. If his tail keeps growing let us know ;)

Just thought I'd post an update.  Looks like Mr. Pepper has a nice swordtail coming in after all!
