I know I need filtration but am worried that it will suck the minnow up or keep it pinned against the tube. My daughter caught a minnow while on vacation and wanted to keep it. What type should I use to avoid this? This minnow is about an 3/4 of an inch long.

Thanks.

Sponge filters are great for small fish that might get sucked in, probably the easiest option as you don't have to mess with everything.

If you want to use a hang on back type filter or something with some sort of intake, you can also find some sort of filter sponge at the pet store and wrap and tie it or cut a hole in the center of it to fit onto the filter intake. If you can't find any filter sponges that would work, you could get some scotch-brite kitchen scours (UNUSED and soapless!) like this and tie it around the filter intake. I prefer the filter sponges though, the scotch-brite scours don't let as much water pass through.

Small zipties or plastic thread that won't decompose like fishing line work to tie the sponge/scour around the filter.

I apologize if any of that sounds confusing, I can make some diagrams if that isn't making too much sense.

Edit: You can also buy tubes and sponges specifically designed for this but personally I haven't found any around that fit my filter or weren't too expensive

Welcome to the TFF forum Duke.
Something that I find useful is the sponges made as replacements for popular filters. I cut a slit in the end of one and just slip it over my filter inlet tube. This is the raw sponge on my desktop.

This is the same filter sponge in place a month later.

This closeup shows one of the fish I was trying to protect with the sponge. It is an adult but is only about 3/4 inch long.

Thanks for the ideas.

I prefer to use a filter with an intake, so I will use the sponge method wrapped around the intake.

Is it a minnow as in what you catch in rivers in the UK if it is i dont see why it would get sucked to it s they are used to fighting strong currents.
