i am going to be getting a 20gallon(us) long tank, and i would like some suggestions about what i should put in it?

I would go with all neons or cards, w/some corys. Black gravel. Black background. Alot of driftwood and plants.

thats a very standard tank in my opinion, best for ppl without a ton of time who are busy. If you want a fish you can watch for hours get the convicts or the Tiger barbs. Also, try out gold barbs they are awesome

i dont really have any favorites or anything i like more, i like them all!

Well, as people above have mentioned, there are a lot of options. 20g long is prettty flexible. You could keep most small fish (under 4"). The key is what combination of fishes you choose.

If you'd like a nice, peacefully community tank, here are some ideas for you:

Top dwellers (choose 1):
6 danios (zebra, pearl)
3-4 livebearers (guppies, platys, swordtails)
1-2 dwarf gourami

Middle dwellers (choose 1):
6+ rasboras (harlequins, red-line, etc.)
6+ tetra (many options)
2+ cherry barbs

Bottom dwellers (choose 1):
3+ cory catfish (many varieties)
3+ otocinclus
3+ loaches (smaller varieties only, no clowns)
1 Siamese Algae Eater (could be in addition to above choice)

One other option might be 1 or 2 of the more peaceful dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma or Kribensis.

There are a lot of things to take into account, but most of the above species would get along. Do a little reading and let us know which fish catch your eye. We'll be happy to help you make sure there aren't any compatability/overstocking issues.

HTH!

that would be quite a small tank for breeding cichlids imo...great if nothing else was in with them. aslo remember you will need somewhere to rehome the fry

sorry. wasn't really on about your reply in particular

however

maybe a pair of convicts

it was probarbly the "pair" comment above the caused alarms to ring a pair means just that too me.. ;) as opposed to two fish

For a twenty gallon, it would have to be if you want small fish like a couple neons, harlequin rasboras, glowlight tetras, and some pygmy cat fish.

if you want a tank with medium fish, i would recomend zebra danois, medium sized tetras, dwarf gouramis, tiger, rosey or gold barbs, and some medium size cats.

if you want to get big fish, i would recomend angels, gouramis, and if you want rainbow sharks.

or a mix of small and medium sized or medium to big sized fish

MY FISH
6 zebras
2 hatchets
3 corydoras
2 rummynose tetras
1 cherry barbs
