I have a 450 litre community tank and am considering getting a little 12gal tank for something nice and colourful. Does anyone have any suggestions what to keep. Must be quite lively and colourful : )

You could do a large group of microrasbora or ember tetras, would look lovely against a heavily planted tank :) Or, there's male endlers which would also make pretty colourful additions. You could always do some corys for the bottom too, to add some extra variety to the tank. Cardinal tetras are really bright + bright, they'd look pretty darn good if you wanted colourful.

You could try some male guppies, though you wouldn't be able to have as many as you would with the above fish. Alternatively, you could have some killis, they can certainly be very colourful.

There's always the betta option, too. Either a colourful betta community or a female betta sorority :)

I think Pablo has hit it on the head with the first answer - Micro fish :) Ember Tetras, Galaxy Rasboras, Pygmy Cories, Sparking Gourami, Badis or Dario and some Cherry Shrimp keep the schools in big numbers for an impressive display :)

Or you could look at a softwater Blue Ram set up with a pair of Electric Blue Rams and a decent sized school of Rummynose Tetras. Set the heater at around 28c and use Almond Leaves or Peat in the filter to lower the ph to around 6.5 - though if your lucky your tap water could be around that anyway but dont just keep them in tap water at community temperatures as it significantly cuts their life expectancy significantly from about 5 years to 18 months - 2 years.

Wills :)

ps lets see some pics of the 450 :D :D
