USA,
I have a lone port acara in a 55 gallon with a pleco. I was wondering what cichlids can go with him? I dont want to breed or anything. I was wondering about a parot fish, as I do like them.

Even without the interest of actual breeding, these fish haven't been kept until they've been kept in couples (this is when all the best character and color is displayed) so no matter how you look at it a mate is always the best choice for fish like this.

Otherwise you can mix and match any new worlds that aren't too aggressive - it's always a risk since cichlids are naturally enemies, and sometimes it takes some trial and error to get fish that will hold to the aquarium truce. The Parrot might work, though being massive and monstrous it will draw all the attention away from your Acara. Festivum is worth considering, or perhaps a Firemouth or Severum.

Personally i'd go with a Firemouth, wonderful fish and a pretty good tankmate for an Acara.

I had kribs withthem, and I just didnt like them, Ive had them for a year, and they got boring, so I moved them to a diffrent tank.

I wasthinking fire mouths as well.

How many would you go with?

Firemouths tend to be reasonably laid back by Cichlid standards but i would still avoid too many males, even in a 55gal. In fact i'd go with no more than 2 and if you want to be cautious 1 male and several females.

They are great fish and i'd agree with you, they are more interesting than kribs (Oops, just upset the krib lovers  )

Get Parrots. They're freakin hillaaarriioous to watch. You want a fun fish, get 3 parrots. Theyre $$ though. Be prepared to pay $20+ for decent medium to large specimens.

I wouldnt buy a big one, as my port isnt big either.
