Hi there everyone, my sister brother and girlfriend have decided to get me a 55 gallon fish tank for christmas its a pretty good gift so they decided to just give it to me without rapping it hahaha. This is not my first tank or not the first time riseing fish. I've had bettas and convict cichlids before and breed them too. wasnt so hard to breed the cichilds tho hahaha they are like rabbits. Well I am undecided about what to put in the 55 gallon. i might got with a couple of red belly's, maybe a arowana or oscars a carnivore type. i also want a community type tank too so really dont know. Any suggestion?? thanks

I would get (and am getting) a red tailed black shark, i just love their look. However, that does severely limit the choice of other fish due to their aggresive nature, but, just an idea!

Not in a long run, unfortunately. Especially not arowanas. They need a huuuuuge tank, not a 55 gallon. You'll find soon enough that a 4 foot long tank isn't as big as it looks.

I don't know about the red bellies (they're illegal here) but oscars will also need a bigger tank than 55 gallons. They need at the very least 4 feet by 2 feet, and yours is likely 4 feet by 1 foot.

If you're itching for a community tank, get a community tank. If you're itching for giant predatory fish, save your money and get a good ole 200 or so gallons.

in terms of more aggressive fish, about the biggest you can go would be a Jack Dempey cichlid. Maybe a Green Terror. But either way your tank mates will be somewhat limited. Community tank wise, you'll have a big world opened to you with that sort of tank. Danios, rasboras, tetras, dwarf cichlids, the like.

How about angel fish? They r sometimes aggressive or maybe a tiger barb. Gold fish could work too. U could have 1 or 2 of them. For non aggressive community tank would be guppies, platties, mollies, tetras, maybe a fiddler crabs or an African dwarf frog but both not together.

I would stick with mid sized community fish if I were you. You could have several different types of fish, instead of just a few huge ones. I suggest you go to your local fish shop and have a look around. Write down the ones you like, then list them out here on forum. Then everyone will make suggestions based on their experiences. Have fun!

Certainly wouldn't suggest a fiddler crab. IMHO, pincers and fins do not mix.
