My betta just doesn't seem to want to eat much of anything. He looks really healthy but I can't get him to eat flakes, and he rarely picks at blood worms

What can I do, as this may have been the demise of my previous betta

hi Kryten,

bettas can be very picky eaters. Try Betta Bio-Gold by Hikari( pellets). I have had luck with that or Betta Bites. 3-4 pellets a feeding and my guys seem to do fine, no problems (knock Wood)
Try not to give bloodworms too ofton to high in fat
Hope this helps
Good Luck

my betta loves those freeze deied blood worms i have to trick him i mix them with his flakes if you really want to give him something he loves try catching him a fruit fly he goes to town on them.

My betta eats Nutrafin max betta food (by hagen) as well as frozen bloodworms, live baby mealworms, and live mosquito larvae if i can get my hands on some :D

Mine lives in a community tank and regularly eats the food meant for the others. He won't touch betta food - just loves all the frozen variety that the goby dragons eat and picks at the flakes that the others eat.

Do you think maybe he doesn't even notice the food? I have 1 in a tank alone and one in a community and both of them literally have to be "lead" to the food or they don't even notice it, I'll lightly tap the glass for the littler tank until he starts watching my finger and THEN he sees the food, and the same with fishy, I'll wag my finger over the water in the vacinity of his pellet and feed them to him one at a time or they'll sink before he finishes the 1st bite (and he won't go below the surface for that kind of food)
BUT last night I peeked over in the big tank and saw him hanging out towards the surface and he looked strange so I went closer and.....he had an entire ghost shrimp in his mouth, just the tail was peeking out, I've been blaming my tetras for their disappearing but I guess he's another culprit -_- , bad news bear, I had just added 2 shrimp to my other bettas tank, because I had thought he might like chasing them around the way Fishy does, so I went to get them out and put them in the big tank so they'd at least have a chance & the room to hide and I'll be darned, he had eaten 1 too!!!! The remaining shrimp leaped into the net with a "get me outta here!" style and I brought him to the bigger tank and he never even made it to the gravel before the tetras got him, :( , poor little guy, I tried to save him and instead I escorted him to his death :-(
But after all the rambling....your betta may enjoy the chase and attack of his food, I guess mine do -_- , if you can stand to see it that is..

Also I've watched mine rip up blanched zucchini like theres no tomorrow

Hmmmm, fresh shrimp! Yeh, my bettas ate all my ghost shrimp--really amazed me because I had been told ghost shrimp, Amano shrimp (any of those tiny shrimps) would be fine with bettas--yeh, as a main course! My bettas also eat snails. In fact, my bettas will eat just about anything. I don't have real picky eaters.

Yeah my shrimp population is slowly dropping to about 5 or so now, and my betta loves to harass my snails too! They just don't learn how to keep their little feeler antennas in & when he sneaks up on them they reach out to feel at him and he'll snatch a bite :p
