I have had my Betta male approx 5 days & I'm struggling with what to feed him The LFS say that they only give their fish flaked food, but when I try he just looks then swims away. I've tried Betta pellets but its the same. Could you suggest what else I could try please?

Variety and quality are the most important things to consider when coming up with a proper diet for your fish. Flakes are not recommended for bettas because they aren't very high quality, and because they are more difficult to digest. Fish were not designed to break down and digest dry, bready air-filled foods. It is similar to when we eat uncooked noodles or rice, in that the food expands in the fish's gut, causing bloating and constipation.

I recommend using a high quality pellet brand, if you can afford two brands, then that is even better. No single pellet formula can provide your fish with complete nutrition, after all. Omega One Betta Buffet Pellets, Atison's Betta Pellets, Ken's Betta Crumbles, and New Life Spectrum are all good brands. You should also consider supplementing your fish's diet with frozen foods like blood worms (for protein) and brine shrimp (for fiber) a few times a week. Try to avoid freeze-dried foods, they can cause very severe constipation and aren't as rich in nutrients as frozen food. If you must use dry food like flakes, pellets, and freeze-dried foods, make sure you soak them in a bit of tank water until they are rehydrated. It will make the dry food easier to digest and more palatable to your fish.

Good luck!

Thankyou very much for those ideas. I will see what I can find on-line as my LFS didn't have a clue when I asked for specialised Betta food. I only want the best for my Betta

Haha will do - but have to wait til summer. I have a pond in the garden is that the best place to look for them? What do they look like & when's the best month to find them?

I've bought some Betta Bio Gold from Viovets online shop. Hope they will be ok.

If your in a local thats tropical then your pond is a great place,I said bucket because they would be right in that bucket not the edges of the pond

Use the bucket of rain or pond water and you'll know exactly what they look like

as soon as it gets warm skeeters come out the ones bite'n are female and they breed thus skeeter larvae can be found during rainy season here in Detroit thru summer I harvest mostly during summer

Good topic, this is exactly the question that I was going to ask. Can you let me know how you get on with that Bio Gold you have bought.
Thanks

Yes of course I will ghent_3rd still waiting for it to be delivered :(. I've managed to get him to eat a little flake the past couple of days by dipping my ittle finger into his tank so that a single food flake will stick to it. This I then put into the tank & the flake starts to sink straight away. My Betta then eats it. Just an idea maybe you could try & since doing this he has also started to come up & lean against my finger seeming to enjoy his fins being gently stroked. Very endearing :) Oh I've also found some Tetrafresh Delica Brine Shrimp in 'Vitamin Enriched Jelly' which comes in handy little sachets that you squeeze some straight into the tank? He def like that. I bought it from P@H

I have several P@H near me so will give that a try but would like to be kept updated when you get that stuff delivered. I'll try the flake thing in the morning.

Cheers

John

Give him blood worms until he starts to eat (they are a treat food).

I feed my male betta pellets; he will also eat flakes but he isn't as impressed.

My girls get betta flakes (tetra betta).

They get blood worm and brine shrimp as a treat; as a real treat soak their food in garlic juice lol.

My boyfriends male betta is like a hoover and he'll eat anything.

Are they live bloodworms / brine shrimp? My LFS stocks them occasionally & is quite a journey to get to unfotunately. How long do they keep for approximately in the fridge or would it be worth it to make one of those brine shrimp hatcheries maybe? I saw how to do it on Youtube.

Sorry ghent_3rd still haven't received those pellets yet - need to chase em up I think.

Get frozen ones, keep them in the freezer and cut the block cos he won't eat it all; it also means you can bulk buy. So say 1/4 block per feeding (you will tell better once he starts eating) and make sure you defrost them before giving him them to eat. I put them in a mini jar to defrost, or my boyfriend puts them in a jar of water to defrost quicker.

I have those little blocks, but called Tubifex Worms - are they the same thing??
