What To Do In A Power Cut?

I have the perfect solution as this happened to me once. Then I bought a generator. Anyway this is what you do. Always have a hang on the back filter for back up if you don't use one or get inventive with your canister. I'm going to explain this with the idea that a hang on the back filter is being used.
1. take the lid off.
2. find a clean hose such as a python hose about 1.5 inch in diameter give or take a little.
3. put one end in the tank
4. then just syphon water into the filter (It will run on its own with no electricity)

As for the heat this can be tricky.
1. have the syphon hose swing off to the side of the tank
2. place some boxes or books (or what ever you have) next to tank under the hose
3. put a candle on the books and light it
you may have adjust the height of the books for proper temp (do not melt the hose)
here is a small pic I drew up (I'm not an artist  ) that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Feel free to alter in any way to suit your needs.

Dude, thats a great idea

Could you imagine burnign through the hose? Come home to a flood

There is a european store called Aldi. They were selling generators for only 90 euro a few weeks back...Gladly bought one and it came in handy about two to three days later when the electricity went off for about four hours!!

Definately get a generator...it will keep you at ease to know that you are not guessing and your fish will be safe (and you wont burn your house down...hahaha...nice candle suggestion!)

Ya I'm a light weight genius :teacher:

Anyway you don't have to use the candle. If your worried, just do small water changes with warmer-hot water periodically.

I just do water changes, using warm water from the faucet. Our water is heater by gas, so no batteries required.

I have a canister and whenever the power goes out for more than 2hrs. I disconnect the outgoing hose and drop it into a bucket , this creates a instant syphon and the water goes from the tank down through the filter and into the bucket. Once the bucket is full I pour is back into the tank. I do this about every 30min until the power comes back on. I figure it should keep the bacteria from dieing. Also make sure you unplug the filter, I don't think I have to tell you what would happen if the power came back on while you where doing this  .

Also putting the filter media in the tank so it could float around would probably work too. And I guess if it came down to it you could make a fire outside and warm up some water , the old fashioned way.
