hi all, i want to breed summit, but im nto sure what!!

im thinking of swomething that sells at a lfs for medium ish prices (not like guppies) and i dont expect to be pulling in loadsa cash anyway :p its just mainly an intrest.

Ive currently got a 125ltr Juwel tank (3ft, about 30 gallons?) and a 5 gallon i can use for grow out, then back in the bigger tank when large enough not to be eaten, then sold.

I was maybe thinking of bettas? (btw these tanks will have no other fish in them) but i thought bettas fighted each other :/
or maybe something like a smaller breed of chiclid (rams?)

any ideas???

Rams and bettas would work.

As for bettas fighting, you should read the pinned articles on betta breeding.

A type of fish that would breed well in the 30 gallon tank is angels, but you would have to do research and get a group of them in order to get at least one good pair.

angel breeding sounds fun, but wouldnt i need another large tank to grow them up in? or could i put them in the 5 gallon when they are tiny, just long enough till they are large enough for the adults not to eat them?

I'd say honey gouramies would be ideal. Or dwarfs. You could keep about 5 adults in the 30 gallon and breed/raise the fry in the 5 gallon. Then move the fry to the 30 gallon once they begin getting larger. You should be able to sell them for a descent price. Not as much as angels perhaps but deffinately a bit more than guppies.

Hi toggle :)

If you are just beginning as a breeder, I would suggest that you try your hand at raising corys. Certain ones, such as bronze or albino C. aeneus are fairly easy to raise and there is a good chance your lfs, if it's an independent owner (not a chain store) will be happy to have them. I raise them myself and have sold quite a few of them already.

Bettas and gouramis are much smaller when they hatch and so are harder to raise. They are not for beginners. :D

I wouldn't recommend bettas either just because there is so much involved and you would need way more then two tanks, you'd need 100+ jars, food cultures and hatcheries, daily water changes on your jars and growout tank to name a few. Also, you have to be willing to spend money on your fish. If you breed just petshop bettas you will have a really really hard time finding homes for babies. Most breeders sell their stock at betta shows and directly to the customer. That's not an option with pet store stock.

I do think you have two great tanks that will provide you with some great options  Many that have been listed, I'll add zebra danios, they're a pretty good one for a person just starting out :)

convicts

blue rams

Yellow Lab/electric Yellow african cichlids

kribensis

with cichlids, the list goes on and on.....

Kind of off topic - sorry... but how large do labs get? Could you breed a pair in a 20 gallon?

edit: nevermind - I googled it :D
