What To Add To Tank

Hi All

We currently have 8 Harlequin Rasboras and 5 Zebra Danios in our tank. I plan on adding another 3 Zebra Danios to take it up to 8 of each, with a view to increasing to 12 of each shortly.

I'd like to add a third species of fish into the tank, and would like something colourful, and striking, whilst being peaceful and low maintenance.

Any suggestions?

It's a 64L tank.

You're pretty much at the top of your stocking, you should stop at 8 rasboras and 6 danios. The danios realistically need a 3ft aquarium so that they have enough swimming space because they are very active fish.

If you do the above, you could consider a single, male dwarf gourami.

You are also missing fish for the bottom of the aquarium, but there is no space for any now..

How big do danios grow? I know that the harlequins only get to about 3cm at max so 8 of those is 24cm of fish. That still leaves plenty of room and i thought danios only grew to about the same size?

I would say you would be fine to add maybe 6-8 Pgmy cories to feed on the bottom, and maybe try and find a few mid dwelling fish.

Incorrect: harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteramorpha) grow to 5+ cm, hengeli rasboras (T. hengeli) grow to 4 cm and espei rasboras (T. espei) grow to 3 cm. Are you sure you have harlequin rasboras and not espei? They look quite similar to people who have not seen them next to each other.

Danio rerio, most common danios, grow to about 5 cm, but they are active fish, so require at least a 3 ft long aquarium so they have space to swim. In a 2 ft aquarium, they will not be able to reach their full potential of 5, healthy, cm. In a 2 ft aquarium, they will not be as healthy as in something larger.

Stocking by cm is not a reliable way. For example, a 24cm oscar will die in an average 2 ft aquarium in a matter of hours.

I keep using 2ft as an example, because that is the standard length for a 64 litre aquarium (I also have one).

The Corys could fit, but only if the Danios went. Ok, even using the measurement based stocking (which is inaccurate to the point of useless), 13 5 cm fish is 65 cm of fish already in the tank.. isn't that over the maximum even now?

There is definitely no space left for mid-water fish, there is only space for one surface fish.

i agree with Kat your already at your full stocking with the danios, and they are too active for a 2ft tank.

personally if it was mine i would remove the danios get a group of dwarf cories and a dwarf gourami
