I'm not gonna say i'm an expert, but i gotta go with Ryan on this one. as son as i saw the pic, the word "sunfish" popped in my head. I looked it up and it sure looks like some sort of Lepomis species to me. Does it have "a fleshy, earlike extension at the rear of the gill plate"? If so, my book would say they are a lepomis species. It also says 'These sufishes are deep-bodied, slab-sided centrarchids with 3 anal fin spines. The book is called "North American Native Fishes For the Home Aquarium", by David M. schlesser. ( I got it for a dollar at a big bookstore in down town Santa Cruz while I was waiting for the rest of the people from my college visiting field trip to finish checking out the city and bars and stuff so we could go back to the school, since they were apparently not going to the beach. I guess I got something out of that trip besides the banana slugs.)
