we have a 64L and want a 120l ish one ,

so can it just take half the water out of mine and put in the new one , then put the heater and filter in . then the fish , then top the new one up  ?

cheers d

Completely set it up. Cycle it. And get it ready before you add the fish.

I don't think starting it from scratch is necessary. If you take all the water from your old tank to fill into the new tank and top it off with fresh dechlorinated water it will feel to the fish like a 50% water change.

I would remove the fish and put them in a separate container/bucket while you ready the new tank and fill it in with the water, start the filter and wait a bit until the debris has settled then add the fish. Make sure you keep the filter media wet during the whole procedure, you could even run the filter on the container with the fish if the dimensions of the container allow it.

cool . thats what i was hoping you would say :) . im going to have to find a big bucket . i would set the hole tank up and cycal it but i only have the one pump and iv know where to fit 2 tanks . cheers for advice :)

Best to buy a new bucket/rubbermaid container, it has happened that fish died after having had contact with buckets that still had cleaning residue in/on it!!!

cheers ,. i have a bucket i got new for water changes for that very reason ,. not sure its big enough though , do you think 15 small fish and some shrimp would be ok in a standard size bucket for and hour or to with pump and heater ?

if not il buy something bigger ,.

iv just had a thought , will my 64L big man enough for a 120l tank ? hmmm

Don't know what a standard size bucket holds over where you're at. My buckets are rectangular and hold 15 liter. I could see myself putting my 14 Harlequin Rasboras in there for that time, and I would cover the bucket to make it dark and less stressful for them.

By "64L big man" do you mean your filter? If I were you I would then buy another filter and run them both on the tank. I have 2 Aquaclear 50 running on my 40 gallon long tank. I'm thinking if one filter were to ever break down, I'd still have the other saving the day! :)

Or you could get a filter with a larger capacity and switch the media from the old filter over to the new one.
