Hi,

A gravel cleaner is a great thing keeps the tank clean and healthy, along with the filter of course. There are all kinds of cleaners around, I use a Hagen battery powered cleaner, Lazy I know, but it works great.

I shorted out a perfectly good vacuum cleaner that way. Just kidding.

Yup, a gravel vac is indispensable. But don't vac more than 1/3 of the gravel when you do a water change. No need to get too close to your plants, either.

Depending on the vac, you could remove too much water. I've never seen anyone recommend vacuuming all the gravel at once.

Made the mistake of going to python.com myself once. It was pretty nasty.

I am a HUGE fan of the Python Gravel vac, it hooks right up to a sink up to 50 ft away and the water from your sink can create suction or with the turn of a knob, can start filling your tank. It has made my gravel cleaning and water changes so much faster and easier cause you can ditch the bucket and stuff.
