Hi all,
I am deciding on buying a new aquarium for my fish and as suggested by other i would need a minimum of 190 liters for 3 fancy goldfish

now i have seen few and the one that i particulary like is the corner juwel one names juwel trigon 190

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120896544695?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1426.l2649

it is a bit expensive, my questions are , if i buy the tank only can any stand take the weight of it for instance my drawer or something similar or are those stands designed to high quality to take such weight . i think a 190liter water weights around 300 kg or so.

what are the alternative cheap aquariums that you suggests ?
and the other question is, would you think my apartment floor can take the weight of this ?

thanks

'Normal' furniture can very rarely be trusted to take the weight of tanks; unless you'd be happy for both you and your *ehem* 'largest' friend to stand on it and bounce up and down on it, then it's not strong enough.

There's no way of telling with 100% certainty whether your floor will hold the weight without consulting a structural engineer, but unless your apartment is seriously dilapidated you should have no issues with 190/200l tanks.

A cheaper way of doing things would be to buy a bog standard, plain glass 'box' with a metal frame stand, but it won't look as 'nice' as a proper tank/cabinet combo. It's always worth looking on Ebay/Aquarist Classified/Gumtree/Freecycle/Craiglist or whatever's most active in your area, as second hand tanks come up very frequently and can save you a lot.

Hi Linux442. I have owned a juwel 190 for about a year now. Great tank, I can't fault it. Everyone that comes to my house always comment on how nice it looks. Spacious as well so you can get a good stock of fish in it.

To my mind a good goldfish tank is quite a different thing than a traditional freshwater tropical tank per se. I mean, not all that different but it just has a different feel, often more open (since the goldfish are vegetarians and make various sorts of plants difficult if not impossible) ... so it may be that a big corner tank like that would work out for you.

On the other hand, I agree so much with fluttermoth: there is so much to be said for plain old glass boxes. In many ways, what's so great about them is that in the long run an aquarium is not -about- the box holding water but hopefully about that part simply -disappearing- from your mind.. about you be pulled into the delicious liquid water and plants and stones and sparkling fish, the goings on of another world that you don't get to inhabit but get to imagine yourself peeking in on... and sometimes a curved tank is a distraction to that - it magnifies things in a funny way and sometimes calls attention to itself from the outside, with odd relections of room lights in ways that subtract from this supposed immersion I'm describing. A plain glass front can be simply a window and get out of the way so that the real work you've accomplished can be best shown.

Anyway, good luck with your decision. There is no better way than to simply decide and go forward and begin the experience.

thanks all,
i just bought one from ebay and want to go an collect it
is the stand detachable from the tank so i could fit it into a normal car?

btw, in regard to goldfish been vegeterian, i was thinking that they eat anything such as worm or even a dead fish.

i was at pets at home and they are horrible at keeping their fish and looking after them. almost in all tank you could see 2-3 dead fish.
i think some of the dead fish in those tank one of which was goldfish tank, where bitten by other fish which annoyed me :) and couldn't believe that fish will eat fish

~Yes, the tank will come off the cabinet.

Goldfish are primarily vegetarian, but nearly all fish are opportunistic feeders, and will eat pretty much anything that comes their way.

I'm so glad your getting a new tank for your fishies. I've been wondering how you were getting on with them :)
