What Substrate For Setting Up A Planted Tank?

I'm setting up my first planted tank, and I am unsure regarding what substrate to use. I hear there are advantages to using different types. I was considering using a dirt type though. Does anyone have any suggestions as to whether this is a good idea, and if so, what is a good type to choose?

You could go with john Inness soil and cap it with sand, clay based cat litter capped with sand, cat litter has high CEC so will obsorb nutrients and feed them to your plants, or something like florabase, it's an all in one really, I use it and it's amazing stuff.
