What Substrate Do You Use?

I go by what the mods usually state.... "quote Ianho":

there is no need to turn sand!!

the gas pockets you will hear about are not dangerous for fish, the gas will rise aqnd just gas out the top of the tank. I myself haven't turned my sand for nearly a year. I know of some that haven't turned sand for nearly 3 years, with not one casualty. This is one of those old wives tales in fishkeeping that keeps on coming up.

they can be very harmful indeed, gasses trapped can become dangerous and very toxic over time. thats why i question why people want to kill snails in their tanks. they do such a goood job oof turning over the substrate.

is a common miscoonception to say its just air.. there was a thread discussing the matter about a year ago, and truck highlighted some scientiific evidence. but whatever you 'search' for on here you get 1000 results no matter how specific.

Not disagreeing mate, when I had my first set up I never stirred up the substrate, I did it for the first time and there was an almighty stench (sulphur), I lost 11 out of 14 Lemon Tetras within 12 hours, as long as you clean tank and stir up the substrate regular I don't see a problem :good:

I never moved the rocks in my Mbuna tank, and therefore nver stirred the sand underneath.
When I did the rescape, I lifted the rocks and loads of gas pockets were released. Never seemed to affect my fish though.

i think it can really vary, probably depending on your substrate and its properties, but personally i wont take the risk. i know how bad the gasses can become. your playing russian roulette if you think its fine to leave the gasses and disturb them a year later...

one day you will lose everything...

+1 for Nick, I have seen some very vile things happen to substrate which was not moved.

Having said that, I have also had tanks which were fine with never having anything done to the substrate.

yeah, i really think it depends on your substrate and the stocking you have.
