What Should I Get?

I've been reading about the blue gouramis today and from what I've read, I think I'll be fine (after returning the congos), but could someone confirm if this is okay or not...

2 Blue gouramis (1 male 1 female)
15 Neon Tetras
6 peppered corys
2 albino corys (looking into re-homing)
4 Ottos

I'm going to see if a fish shop nearby (not pets@home!) will take the albino corys or see if someone has a good home for them on here so they can be in a bigger group.

Does that sound like an okay combo and not overstocked?

I'd hold off the Gouramis at the moment, as there seems to be a fatal disease afflicting that particular species. Look at the 'Practical Fishkeeping' website for articles on it.

thanks for the heads-up. I've just spent the past half hour searching on PFK for it, but can't find anything about gouramis and disease..

Ahhh what is the fatal disease affecting the dwarf gouramis?

yeah i reckon that's fine, it's a little bit over so if it was me i'd maybe only get 10-12 neons but it's not so badly over that it's not easily manageable.

oh and just to confirm it is definately dwarf gourami's that disease affects not 'regular' gouramis

Okay, thank you all for your help.. it's been great for helping me make a decision. I wish I'd done this before getting the congos, you can only live & learn.. :)

Thanks again!

I agree with Miss Wiggle. Can I ask why you're re-homing the albino cories, though? Although most like/need larger groups, albinos tend to be fine without a large group of their own kind. If they are acting outgoing and all, then I think you can keep them if you want.
Either way, that should be a nice looking tank! Post some pix if/when you can!

I was under the impression the albinos wouldn't be happy, but figured I'll watch them and see how it goes. I just my fishies to be happy. :)

Well, I took the congos back on friday and bought two Opaline Gouramis.

I really love their personality - coming to the front of the tank when I'm near and chasing my finger if I move it against the glass! One thing which I am worried about which has developed in the past 24hrs is that one is constantly chasing the other, well, except when the victim is hiding in the plants!

When in the shop, we (me & the fish shop dude) spent a good while watching them, trying to decide which were male and female - it was bloody hard! We found two which stuck together and one looked like it had more pointed dorsal fin, but now I'm worried that I have two males!

Is this going to stop once the aggressive one proves that he's boss or is it going to continue??

I'm really worried and dis-heartened that even with lots of research and really trying hard to get a male & female that I may have made (yet another) stocking mistake. What should I do?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that it's the gourami which has a more rounded dorsal fin which is chasing the one with a spikey fin - so is that the female chasing the male?!
