Went to my lfs to get 6 zebra danios, came out with 6 gold barbs, a sick puffer and a new 180l tank. Bearing in mind I'm a newbie, what should I put in it?

In my current tank 30G I have 3 plecs, 3 mollies, 1 swordtail, pair dwarf gourami, 16 neon tetras and 6 gold barbs. Don't worry, they're all babies, and I don't plan on them being in there forever, before you start blasting me for overstocking!

In the 10G I have one very stressed green spotted puffer (called Shaun, cos he's my Puff Daddy).

Should I got for bigger fish in the new tank? Cichlids? Could I do discus? I don't think it's big enough even for 1 oscar?

Any ideas?

Sarah :D

How many gallons is 180 litres? I suck at these conversion things. Anyway i don't think your 30 gallon is too overstocked... maybe if you thinned out the neon tetras a bit... if you tell me how many gallons your 180 is then I'll try to tell you what can go in it.

It's 45G UK according to the converter! 40" x 16" x 20" deep, and can take a maximum of 54" fish.

Well that's definitely too small for an oscar... you could (and should) do discus, they are gorgeous and hardy contrary to popular belief, IME. I wouldn't get sensitive tetras such as cardinals or rummynoses, believe me as beginners we are not ready for it yet. I know from experience, I just had my newly purchased school of 6 cardinals die on my in under 2 days. Save yourself the pain and trauma. I do highly recommend the discus however. And clown loaches, get clown loaches. :p

Yeah weird isn't it? Dunno.gif Why would someone make a comment like that without explaining what they mean?

I'm sure he'll explain himself somewhere along the line, I think it's only fair on Sarah.

Don't worry about FB, we're long time buddies .... he's just winding me up - 2 of my fish died on the same day and now he calls me the fish killer (I did euthanise 1 of them).

SirM, Sean the puffer is the one I asked about in Oddballs, he was too stressed out from the lfs and he is now DeparteD. :-( (When even the fish guy at the lfs says 'Are you sure you want that one miss, he looks like he's about to croak' take his advice and don't give in!)

Still got that 180l sitting there empty..... don't think it's gonna be marine as I've already ordered the under gravel heating for the plants. Something with lots of shrimps..... but I don't know what fish yet! Help please!

Sarah :p

PS SirM...... I  Martha soooooo cute!!!
PPS FB..... 7 posts already and you only joined today!!! Addict!!!!

poor puffer. :rip:

put some dwarf cichlids  :p

discus are too hard to keep so just stick with the dwarf cichlids

EDIT: Btw FB, you're relly weird

Just to clarify the situation, I have the misfortune to work with Paul (FB), and also the stupidity to have recommended this site to him. I had a new syphon pump delivered to work this morning, and Paul thought it was another sort of pump..... I'll leave it to your imagination. He's basically harmless, in a care in the community sort of way :alien: !!!

Sarah

Thanks for the tip on dwarf cichlids, I shall investigate!!! :p
