I was advised by people far more experienced than me that females always have a visible ovipositor, and that was certainly the case in my experience, mine had never bred and it was very eay to sex them, although mine were maybe halfway to adult by the time I bought them, so I'm not sure if it's as easy with tiny babies (as you often seen blue rams sold as).

For Heaven's Sakes KathyM, would you lay off a bit? You really annoy me (I've noticed your posts about a bit now and nearly all of it is crap) and the fact that you cannot accept others who are right when you are wrong lends me to believe that you have a very warped sense of reality and you need to learn to pull your head in.

"advised by people far more experienced than me?" well, obviously misinformed somewhere along the way. Alot of research is a good idea, and not just taking advice from 'experts' as some of these people are not in it for the fishes best interests.

egg ovipositors are only "grown" by the fish when they are about to spawn so this shouldn't be used as a way to sex fish (unless of course they ARE about to spawn AND have clearly got them, in which case in some species its the ONLY way to tell the sexes apart) all the rest of the time they (the fish) wont have them

Thats not specifically true. a huge majority of Plakat Thai Betta males have ovipositors while juvi and loose them at adult hood. Back to the rams though, its realy simple to sex Rams once mature. There are hundreds of threads about it in the new world cichlid section. the give away is usually a long pointed dorsal and an extended crown on the same fin.

Erm that was a bit, well, a lot uncalled for. If you have a problem with someone take it to pm. I saw nothing wrong with Kathy's post, nothing rude, she wasn't having a go just explaining.

I think someone needs a chill pill. And to remember to use pm and not waste board space on this kind of message.

Sorry to stir so much sh*t up. I was just wondering wat my 2 rams were, thats all :S Katchan, the pic u posted before looks like my ram that ive been calling the "male" between the 2. So if they have a pinkish belly they are females. I dont really care either way. Just want them to be able to live together without attacking eachother im happy. They are very pretty females so i dont care :)

Dont worry about it Bozza, some people have nothing better to do than pop on a thread and stir it up and cause an argument - it's not your fault :)

I hope you find the info you need, whatever sex they are - they're stunning :) I've got Bolivians (sexed by Kathy's method incidentally lol and they've never bred that I know of), and they're beautiful too - but (sorry Gabriella and Carlos) not a picking on your blues

Pfff i dont care hehehe. I know ppl have different opinions. I did learn about the blue rams and thanks for the ppl that contributed. Im happy with my female rams

Wasn't going to post, but seeing as Bozza has found the solution to his question I won't be taking it too off topic by coming on to congratulate you on your amazing maturity and helpfulness. What an inspiration you are. Well done you, sticking up for your fella. He must be dead proud. Always good to have a grown up girlfriend on hand in case you feel threatened.

Hi Torrens First My name is Curtis I have been breeding GBRs for 4 years now with over 300 spawns under my belt. The best and most certain (99%) way to sex GBRs is by looking at the dark spot on the body In males there will be no blue spangels in the spot just around the edges only. In females the spanges will extend into some times dramaticll into the spot and some times be in the spot all together. Second the 2nd and 3rd dorsal spine in males extends dramatically where the females dosent so much. Third females even young juvies 3-4 mths will get a slight pinkish hue more silvery pink than out right red pink. Once mature the belly will be pink in various hue but def pink to red. Red being ready to spawn and only then will their opivisors be visable a few days bvefore the do the deed. Here are a few exampels of my Rams.

It looks like you have two females Bozza..

And Nice fish mematrix77.. how do you keep your babies alive?? and what are good tank mates for a breeding pair??? I have a couple in a 55 gal. and they have bred a few time. but I never had much success of keeping the babies alive for more than 3 days...

Hi Bleechme I as of yet had a pair raise any fry they are always gone after they hatch. And believe me i have tryied many times to allow the parents to do their job. But allass it seems the parenting has all but been bred out of aquarium raised fish due to the high demand for rams most hatcheries pull thge eggs and artifically hatch them. Granted i have read on many forums where some were abel to get good parents which didi raise their fry but were far and few between. I artifically hatch my rams using this method I use ozarka water as the hatching water http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/b...ambreeding.html I keep the fry after they are freeswimming in the jar till they are 3-4 times their size doing reg water exchange every 2 days 1/3 and siphoning out trash. I get about 98% hatch with 75-80% survival to 4 mths.

Thanks I'll give this a try, but what do you use to feed your newly hatched fry? I can't find micro worms or anything around here.
