Ok I am this far with my tank and would like some surgestions on which plants to use and where to place ? I would still like to look throught into the kitchin or front room, even if its only a little window!
I still to get some more Slate I am thinking along the lines of a peice about a fist size then using a dremmal cutting away to make it into a little cave if that makes sence with some other smaller sizes of slate around the tank / Root ? (Not to big as my tank is only 60lts 2ft

Any advise would be great.

Hey i wanted to upgrade my garden with new plants, flowers and tress, I am thinking of tropical plants.
I don't know about thef flowers and trees. So please suggest me some good info.

tropical plants

Looking good. Theres some potential there with the wood you've placed and i can see some Java fern and/or some anubias tied to it really looking fantastic. Perhaps a small clump of something like vallis just behind the wood.

Also, for the foreground maybe 2-3 more clumps of whatever hairgrass you've used spread out across will look good. Especially once it fills out. I can see a drop checker so i'm assuming your using pressurised CO2, inwhich case your probably dosing ferts, which will broaden the plants you can use.

Annother foreground plant you could try would be something like Pogostemon Helferi (downoi), placed infront of the wood under neath the slight overhang would look good. Downoi has a great ability to grow out from under things quite nicely.

I'd definately look into the java fern and anubias on the wood idea. Or maybe try a moss on there?

Hi Verminator thanks for taking the time to post on my thread.

You are correct I do use Co2 (Forgot to mention) I have some twisted vallis behind the root, it's just a bit on the small side at the moment  I am only dosing 6ml of Tropica Plant Nutrition + a week but want to increase it when I get back from my short break away. I belive if I increase the dose I would have to do more water changes. (Do you know anything about dosing ferts ?)

I also have a little moss on the side of the Root inwich seems to be doing ok ? I did have some on the long over hang but for some reason it started looking a bit roapy after a week so I ditched it. (Maybe it needed to acclimatize to the tank ?) You are spot on about the hair grass I only bought 2 pots of eBay to see how much it would cover, I have now ordered another one.

I like the Pogostemon Helferi and Java Fern idear :good: Do you know of any red/brown plants as I would like to add a bit of colour or do you think it might be a bit to much ?

Edit: This is proberly a stupid question but dose the water outlet pipe from the filter have to be in the tank to help circulate or could I get away without it ? As I think it would look better if it was not there ! Or I could always get a clear sucker to secure it.

Whats your lighting? There are plently of plants to choose from.

Some cryptocoryne wendtii would be nice around the base of the wood I think.

I'd be tempted to put some sort of sword plant in, ech. ozelot maybe :)

You might have to be careful about adding more slate. I 'm not exactly an expert on these things .... and I'm sure someone will pipe up with the answer but I think it will up the pH. From my understanding thats why it's used more in cichlid tanks.

Hi PD.

My Lights are 2 x 15 watt T8 power-Glo (18000 K)

I'm loving the look of the cryptocoryne wendtii :good: Any idear how big they grow and are they easy to trim up ?

That ech. ozelot looks ok, where would you put that ? I need to get my wife to draw me a plan out so I can build up a picture of what it would look like.

Depends which variety you get, not sure which is the common type. Wendtii 'tropica' (according to tropica) gets to about 6-10cm high, whereas wendtii "brown" apparently can get to 25cm high. I imagine most are about 15cm. cryptocoryne parva is the smallest (5-10cm high) thats quite nice... I have crypt. x willisii is about 10cm max high at the moment...

I like the idea of the moss, and the vallis behind the wood, crpyts around it etc... Not sure where the ozelot would go but I just like the plant :p probably just left of the wood.

too much choice :)

I think your tank looks fab. What are those grass type plants in the middle? I REALLY like them :)

Some sort of moss on the wood might look nice too.
Thanks for your comments dipsydoodlenoodle :shifty: The grass is Dwarf Hair Grass but unsure what strain. I bought it on eBay hair grass if your interested.

As I say I'm not certain but beleive thats the case.

What is your pH?

I'm pretty sure its inert, atleast proper slate is. Rather than sandstone slate, which has visual differences anyways...

they use it for roofing tiles and it says on wiki "Due to its thermal stability and chemical inertness, slate has been used for laboratory bench tops and for billiard table tops. "

Slate is fine...you could do loads in the way of planting this. I think i would stick with the hairgrass at the bottom right hand side. Probably but a little bit more in. I woulf then head up to mid ground plants, like a nice Anubias barteri, and if you want to keep it a species tank, then head up to something like Needle leaf Java on the wood.
