I've had planted tanks before but not such a small one. I want it to look good but I'm not that familiar with plants and I need suggestions for plants that will either remain small or have smaller leaves so that it will look right. I am thinking of java moss as a type of carpet perhaps or maybe riccia, maybe java fern if I keep the larger leaves trimmed, but I'm rather stumped after that.
The tank is a 5g with 10 watts of PC daylight over it. This little tank will be a low tech type with plain potting soil on the bottom covered by pea gravel. A couple small branches for accent and one or two ghost shrimp along with a male betta. No filtration, only an air pump for mild water movement.
I've done this type of thing with a 10g and crypts, java fern, and a dwarf lily and the plants went wild! I had a pair of rams in there along with the shrimp....it was a nice set up and didn't experience any algae problems. But the crypts had to be constantly trimmed back and got quite a thick growth.

BTW, if you have pics of the plants you are talking about, it would be very much appreciated as would any tank pics you might want to share!! :D

Go for plants with small leaves, smaller anubia species can look well, anubia nana or petite.

10 watts over a 5 gallon is not very much light at all, you are going to be very restricted in what you can grow, i would stick to low light plants, have a look Here under the low light section, they give lots of examples with pictures, that should get you started.

Thank you so much for the links!! :D

Not only do I now have an idea on what I want to do with this tank but I have the info I need on the various plants!! Thanks again!!!
