on sunday (2nd July) I am getting a 60x30x30cm tank, and am (hopefully) getting java fern on bogwood and maybe java moss. Any ideas on some kinda background plants that wont get so massive that they get out of control? I will have sand in it, sorry dont know wpg  but it'll just be the lighting that comes with the tank. Thanks in advance, ask questions if needs be because im bound to have missed something out lol :D

I think amazon swords need root tabs in order to survive and once they get their roots established they will overgrow the sand. I reccomend hygrophilia polysperma as a good background plant :)

Swords are a very hhardy plant and don`t need tabs to survive.

they wouldnt make the best background plant i tend to have mine in the mid ground. vallis or cabomba are good easy plants to look after

ok thankyou everyone! :D you'll probably see what i do in the aquarium pics section before long ;)

I *think* Amazon Swords would get too big for that sized tank. With frequent pruning you might be able to "Bonsai" it (I think Jimbooo did this with his), but otherwise they'll get too big. And they do really need root tabs/plant substrate in order to thrive. As for alternatives, you could try twisted vallis, or easier plants include Cabomba, Egeria, or Water Wisteria. Either way, when you set the tank up you'll want to use some of these faster-growing plants to combat any algae that may arise, as Java Ferns/Moss are fairly slow growing.

Hope this helps,

Rob.
