Hi. I got an old filter from a friend who has a healthy (cold water) tank. Popped it in a couple of days ago but I don't have ammonia to add to the tank to 'feed' it.

Am I right in thinking I can add fish food to the water. Will it do the same job? Total noobie questions I know. Sorry.

Fish food will feed the bacteria but it will need to start to decompose first. If you have no fish yet, try powdering some fish food so the thing you are trying to get decaying starts smaller and can decompose sooner. Beware of adding too much food to an unoccupied tank. When it starts to decompose you can expect the water to become cloudy and the tank will smell. I would lean toward getting some ammonia to better control what is going on and save the fish food or the fish.

Go and get some PURE ammonia, Boots or Homebase should be able to help - but be quick, or your media will be dead !
