what media do i want to keep to togeather? so like one filter for bio and the other for mech ect ect

I any sorry about all the questions but we all gota learn someware and i hope to be able to help others when i learn abit from the experts! thanks gary

gary what is it your trying to do? your filtration all be it mechanical or bio can normally run together, your question doesnt seem to be explaining what it is your trying to acheive? or do?

Hi sorry , i have 3 running filters two with mixed filtering! i thort it was better to run one filter bio and one mechanical , insted of haveing 1filter running bio and mechanical ??

So basical is it better to have 1 filter doing all bio and a nother doing all mechanical

So im asking what filter media is mechanical and what is bio??

so is a carbon sponge bio or mechanical ?? ect ect

OK ok

is it better to have one filter running bio and a nother mechanical....

Thanks and sorry

all filter material is mechanical in one way or another. i.e. it traps particles of waste.
Biological filter mediums are those that harbour beneficial bacteria.
So commonly filter mediums do both mechanical and biological.
Chemical is the one thats different as the filter material is made up of certain compounds that react with the contents of the water to remove certain nasties.

carbon sponge:
chemical first and fore most but also mechanical as it wilol trap muck, and over time it will harbour beneficial bacteria so biological as well

confusing ain't it!!

Yes defo confusing :( thort i had it right!

I got a wet/dry filter with eheim substrat (bio filter medium) so that was my bio filter

so it doesnt really matter haveing all the media mixed up then?? that was my main worry

Gonna sidetrack you here Gary, sorry. Have you ever used an eheim wet/dry? I've never used one myself, but every time I see them brought up, people complain about how they're a royal pain in the rear to get to operate properly...

Nope mine is working fine??? emptys and fills back up fine!

I got told to use the same amount of tubeing on each side so i did.... and also got told if it doesnt empty then its too low from the water level!

But mine is fine , people also say they are loud??? maybe a little bit but stick it in your cabinet with the door closed on it and the noise has gone! my tank is in my bed room and i cant even hear it!

Hope that helps! if they work i say get one i duno what they are ment to do like but lol mines doing somethink!!! and my lfs said they are the best for marine .....

When they work (and are not bothersome from noise), they are apparently exceptional filters. So hey, if yours is workin, more power to ya :good: Maybe in the future you can advise people and help em out if they have problems with their own ;)

I sure would love to help people out when i can!! im on hear everyday so hopefully learn abit from hear and doing the real thing my self! getting there slowley!

Do you know how often i shud change the bio media in a wet/dry?

Unless the media is literally falling apart (which it wont do for years), don't bother changing it. It may clog up full of rubbish every now and then, but putting some fine media in front of it helps prevent this quite a lot. If it clogs up, squeeze it out in some removed tank water to remove the particles of rubbish.

They tell you to change it every 6 months so they can make money from selling the media separately at often stupidly high prices.

Even if you just change half of it, you are still removing half of the bacteria so you will very possibly have problems during the time the bacteria have to multiply and cover up the new half of media.
