Near as I can tell they are Malaysian Trumpet Snails. I believe they were stowaways when I introduced a crayfish into my tank. It did not live long but I believe he brought some buddies with him. Oh and I included a picture of my tank so you guys/gals can bust my chops for inadequate tank care, but I have mastered the art of crystal clear water so that can often give me a false sense that everything is OK. I first noticed one snail and then I noticed a couple of very tiny ones and now I have probably have around 100 in the tank if you factor in the ones probably hidden in the gravel. But at least....a lot.

So are these snails a problem?

Yes, looks like MTS.

They aren’t usually a problem, because they spend most of their time under the substrate. They can get annoying to look at, but it’s all up to you.

I think they kinda look cute, my main worry was if they posed a problem. But if they are digging around the gravel and stirring things up and consuming all the funky stuff and algae, that just makes my job easier...until it doesn't make my job easier.

It’s all up to you... I would personally leave them though. :)

Leave 'em.in there. You'll be glad ya did. They are like a canary in a mine. You'll know you're overfeeding if you have a million of them in short time. You'll know you have water problems if they die off before anything else. In the mean time, they will be an excellent clean up crew. And they will dig around and help keep the sub clean...

"You'll know you're overfeeding if you have a million of them in short time" Whooopsie. I really try hard to not overfeed them, but.....a million in a short time seems to suggest that maybe I am. Another problem I have is that my platy's are breeding like republicans...it's crazy. I started with two and you see the results.
