4 Days ago one of my Siamese Algea Eaters started looking fat/swollen. It had started to refuse food and was very slugish. I decided to set up my hospital tank. I had run the filter media in my external filter for a week so changed this over to the in tank filter and used my main tank water so the water would be the same. I didn't move the fish over straight away as I wanted the tank to be set up and temp to be correct as I did a partial water change.
I set the temp at 25c as this is what my main tank thermometer said and also the heating element. I then bought a new thermometer just to check. As far as I could see the all the hospital tank environment was exactly the same as the main tank. I transfered the fish.
I then noticed how much cooler the hospital tank felt compared to the main tank to the touch so I put both the thermometers in the same tank. Oh bugger. They gave different readings by 5c. The main tank heating element was set at 25 but heating the tank to 30c, and the thermometer was indicating 25 too. I took the thermometers back to LFS and it was an faulty thermometer. I purchased a new heating element too for main tank. This meant the fish was transfered to a tank 5c cooler. Bloody thermometers.
The SAE (fish not stamped address envolope) had dies today but not sure why. Is it likely to be the temp difference due to fauly equipment or something else. I have no obvious symptoms apart from what I stated above.
Lesson learned:
When buying second hand tank get new heating element
Use 2 thermometers so check its not faulty
Any ideas
