I am wondering what peoples oppinions are regarding rock backgrounds in their aquarium? Do you think that they enhance a planted tank?

I personally love them although I have a significant concern with mine. Eventually fish waste accumilates behind it and I find it very difficult to completely remove. I have considered using silicon to fix it watertight to the rear face of my tank although if I do decide to do this I need to make sure that it is totally water tight.

Have any of you guys ever had these same concerns and if so, what did you end up learning from it?

This is a picture of what I am talking about:

I think they look nice, but I want as much space as possible in our tanks and they look like they take up a lot of room.
Also I'd be afraid of fish getting stuck behind it.

I have the oldfashion kind the stick on the back picture kind on one of my tanks. It helps to hide wires and tubes. I think background are great. The rock ones look cool but not my thing.

My other tank is in a cut out in the wall so no background for that tank. It all depends on what look you are going for.it should not matter what we think as long as you like it.

I love them!

I think it adds to the natural look of a planted tank. It also helps hide all the mechanicals. I have no issue with mine accumulating waste behind it and I drilled a hole and attached screening for the free floe of water behind it. Mine is siliconed in place and aside from the screened hole, there is no way for anything to get behind it.

Here are a couple pics.
