What do you all think about buying feeder goldfish and raising them in a proper aquarium and care for them properly as if they weren't feeders.

Has anyone tried this at all?

What exactly are most feeder fish and how big do they get?

I know most of the feeder fish could be sick and underfed and not taken care of, but if they were treated and fed well would they be just as good as any other fish?

these are the little guys I picked up

Most feeder goldies are either common goldfish or comet goldfish. They get rather large, commons average at around 8", I think comets might get a little bigger? They can be great pets, sure, if properly cared for. I know someone who has one that is around 15 years old :)
Here's a site that has a pic of full-grown comets.

Well I have a 55 gallon that is pretty much empty besides a shubunkin in there that is about 4 inches long right now. I am looking forward to building a larg pond out back, so do you think I could start raising feeder goldfish? I've always felt sorry for the cute little things and have always been tempted to buy them whenever I go to the fish store.

of course I would quarantine them before I introduced them to the 55 gallon for my shubunkin's safety. :D

Sure, I don't see why not :)

I know it's not the same but I once saved a feeder hamster from the pet shop!! It's the best hamster i've ever had!!
awww I usually always go into the fish store and there are always just like 2 or 3 feeder fish left in the tank swimming alone amongst a bunch of dead feeder fish and I am always tempted to buy them and make them better and big and fat. :D

but of course you then run the risk of getting too attached to your feeders, too attached to feed them to other fish. heh. that's what would happen to me.

Well I am not going to feed them to any other fish. I was going to raise them and keep them as pets...like they should be kept.

When I did some research into my freebie fish I got with my panda cories, I found out that he was a lampeye and these are sometimes used as feeder fish. He is soooooo cute with his bright blue neon like eyes...I could never let him be gobbled up

Aww yeah there are always a bunch of different looking fish in the feeder tanks, so who knows what they will turn out to be.

So I went to the LFS today and purchased 2 feeder goldfish. One is a bright orange and one is a dull grey/brown color. They're both about an inch long and are sooo adorable. I sure hope they make it. They are even eating and everything.

Look forward to the grey one changing to orange as well, goldfish fry start out that colour and change as they age. Apparently they can turn back to silver in their senior years, that's what the 15 year old fish I mentioned did :p

My neighbor has some ex-feeders in his outdoor pond. They are now 3 years old, around 10" long or more and are very fat and healthy. Getting near a pound in weight I would guess. And yes, they do turn all orange eventually.
