I bought a green spotted puffer on friday and he was fine, very active, lovely vibrant green colour, about an inch long, healthy appetite. Yesterday though he started to act unwell, sitting on the bottom. He then perked up a bit and started swimming around but was twitching a lotand he gradually change colour, turning a sludgy brownish colour all over apart from one patch on top of his head and he seems to have white cottony growths around his mouth.Today he is swimming around bashing into the tank decor, he wouldn't touch the frozen blood worm i offered him yesterday and this morning. The tank is a 35g mature tank which was treated with flubenol yesterday when he started to act unwell. The water tests fine, 0 for am, n2 and n3. What could this be, is it cotton mouth? Should i try to return him? I think i have lost the receipt. He is in freshwater at the mo as he was at the lfs, i was planning on starting to up the salinity in a couple of weeks.

if hes got cotton wool like growths on his mouth then its a fungus disease. i found that aquarium salt is the best treatment of it. maybe give him a salt bath.

O.k, how do you give a salt bath? As he is a potentially brackish fish is it o.k to use aquarium salt?

The Green spotted puffer is brackish. It will need water that has marine salt in it. This should also help with the fungus (which is most likely caused by not keeping the fish in the right water).

Check out the brackish forum for details of how to change the tank to brackish and look after the GSP.

O.k, i am now so angry! I just called the shop were i bought him and the guy told me all that he was in salt water! I asked the girl in the shop when i bought him and she said they were in fresh! The guy said any salt will do, they use table salt! Can you beleive that? I am off to get some marine salt now, i just hope it is not too late to save the poor little guy.

ive had green spots before and yes they are brackish...they DO require salt...the people at your LFS are morons...who shouldnt be near a fish or prolly any other animals...but like they said salt will help

He wasn't at all right, even after adding marine salt so i returned him to the store. He souldn't close his mouth and was throwing himself at the glass constantly. They weren't bothered, said that was perfectly normal behaviour for a puffer aclimatising, yeah right!

Bless him.
Good Luck.
