Not really. I have easy to grow plants, so I need not know the ins and outs really. Just the main stuff.

I don't need to add nitrate to my tank because I always have a reading from the fish alone.

CheeseSpecialist is lucky! Once you get to the point where dosing nitrate is a requirement, you're forever mixing and dosing! It's just another part of maintaining a tank, I guess. None of us will ever be able to shake those water changes though.

When my nitrates first went to zero I had a huge algae outbreak. That is another reason for the nitrate requirement.
