So is this a fungal or just fin nipping??

It looks like fin rot to me as well. But it could have started from an injury!?

Could be fin rot.

Ok, the Gourami is the only one showing signs, could it spread to the other fish?
How do I treat it?

thanks in advance for any advice

Edit: I Googled fin rot and found that it is either from poor water or infection from injury.
I'm going to assume injury as I test constantly and do bi weekly water changes.
I also read that it seems to be non contagious and is often found in only one or two individuals in a tank,

should I try to quarantine and treat with Myxazin, Melaflix or gentian violet?
this will be difficult as the only extra tank i have is currently being used for a fish-less cycle

Lots of water changes is first thing that might help it cure. Frequent 25% changes or so, in a distance of a few hours maybe.
If that doesn't work within a few days, try salt (not entirely sure but aquarium salt I think, someone confirm or infirm this please).
And if all else fails, try melafix or betafix. But be careful as it may hurt their air breathing organs.

Ok I'll try stepping up the water changes for a awhile. I'd rather not dose anything if I don't absolutely have to.

Fish fins heal extremely fast.
I've had a hoplo that got his dorsal fin nipped to shreds by 4 bettas (long story...) and once I removed the bettas, the fins healed, but I didn't even know much about water changes back then, I was doing one every 4-5 days in 100%).
Then there are my female swordtails: the red female used to get her dorsal fin nipped in her bickering with the male over who gets to own a decoration in the tank. Got healed so fast, not even one day passed and her dorsal was fixed. I did small water changes during the weekdays (1.5 L) and big ones (20-30L) at weekend.
My lyretail constantly gets her tail nipped by the red female, but it heals within a day... only to be shredded again when they bicker. -.- Crazy females.

The poor little guy passed while I was out today :rip: he really didn't look that bad and no other fish is even close to sick or looking poorly in anyway.

I broke down and called my ex for advice..
He tested with his briefcase sized test kit and green lighted the tank.
"I got the huge compliment on my farlowella that they are touchy fish and mine looks stellar :hyper: YAY me!!

He agrees to fin rot but stated that "Gourami are sensitive due to the way they are mostly bred, the breeders you will be getting fish from from Pet-smart cheat and dose Antibiotics to reduce losses so you end up getting weak fish"

He offered some "Fish mox" If I wanted to try another and instructions on how to wean em down, but also said I'd be better off using a few of his favorite shops for my fish and staying away from chain stores.

I'm Inclined to believe him but has anyone ever heard this of Gourami? are they really bred weak like that?

Edit: he did go on for a bit about how he was able to pay so many of our bills with the fish he bred in the basement,(he really did.) quote" A good breeder pays attention to viability of the strain, and then his profit"

I have a new perspective of a man I thought I knew, and to think I got pissed when he called off something due to " A tank emergency"
Dont get me wrong, more to the separation than just that but makes me think there is an aspect of him I never bothered to get to know, A good one at that.

Poor fishy. I guess the infection got to his organs or something. And yeah, some fish may have a weakened immune system, seems to be happening to guppies nowadays as some may say around here. Back in 1997-2001, my guppies were tough little guys, surviving anything including not having a filter. The only problem after inbreeding was sterility, which stopped them all from breeding (females never got pregnant their whole lives) and then when they got old at around 2.5 years, they died and I never bought a single guppy the whole time, that colony was given to me by a friend (who also dumped a 50L tank with all kinds of fish in it and no filter).

From what I understand there is such a thing as Dwarf Gourami Disease that is only found in this species. Something to do with the spleen! But dwarf gourami are very sensitive fish and can easily catch diseases.

Sorry about your loss :rip:

Your ex is really showing a nice side of himself. Shame those things sometimes happen too late, I obviously don't know what happened and don't need to know, but you sound like you are a bit confused by it all.

Looks Like Fin Rot To Me!
need To Catch It Early To Get Rid Of!. And Hope That your other fish dont get it as well..
