I want to get a better HOB filter for my 10 gallon planted tank. I plan on over-filtering, so consider a filter that is rated for a 20-30 gallon tank. Also, low noise is crucial!

What caught my eye was the rena and hagen lines of filters.

Let me know what you think!

well what I am currently using is a Tetra Whisper Power filter for a 10 gallon but what I personally would use is a Marine land since I have had good experiance with them. Also I suggest using a 20 gallon filter instead since extra filtration is good as long as you don't blast your fish with it. I also suggest a second filter if you have the time and money. With my HoB filter I have an internal Fulvel 2 filter which is meant for 25 gallons. In total my filtration is good for 30-35 gallon. Also I hear aqua clear is a good one since it has 3 types of filtration stacked on top of each other making it easy to change certain parts of it and allow for more bacteria growth.

Aquaclear are the best IMO. I still have an emporer 400 and a penguin 200, and they do fine but you are limited by the type of insert they use. Aquaclear lets you customize your media.

The AquaClear is very quiet as long as you keep the water level high in the tank. Another benefit of a high water level is that the filter will be able to prime itself if the power ever temporary goes off while you are away. Otherwise the filter will run dry and the motor will get hot.

Aquaclear...the one that I'm using ATM is roughly 12 years old and still works like a champ. I've opted to just cram the thing full of sponges instead of using the activated carbon or amrid.

Yeah, those things are bulletproof. :flex: I have one that's about 18 years old. From bottom to top I use one and a half sponges, filter floss and than biomax.
